    Milling Whole Wheat Flour

I won't go into the details but I've cut out all enriched flour since last July. I've been baking bread, biscuits, bagels, etc with whole wheat flour, and it seems that in moderation, I can eat whole wheat baked goods and continue to lose weight.

So I pulled the pin. I am excitedly waiting on the delivery of a counter-top Komo electric grain mill. The plan is to make my own whole wheat flour by putting grains in the top and getting flour out of the bottom.

Supposedly, freshly ground flour has more nutrients. Whatever. We'll see. I grew up on a farm and the idea of milling my own grains is appealing!

Anybody else mill grains? Here's a pic of the mill I purchased. It has two stone plates that do the grinding and it's adjustable to go from cracking to milling very fine flour.

I'd interested in hearing about your experiences.

This is on my list for sure. Very interested in this journey. I have read a lot about this but never have pulled the plug. I believe there is a bit of a learning curve on the cooking side. Please keep us posted on your progress.

So far, my journey with the learning curve is simply replacing enriched flour with whole wheat and enjoying the results. I'm sure there are way more subtleties involved than just swapping out the flours. But I'm having fun!

We started grinding our own flour back in the early 70’s. First with a hand cranked one and progressed through several motor driven one. We then bought a WonderMll which really did a great job. Not much to it especially after going motorized. We gave ours away to our daughter who has more energy than we do now. https://www.thewondermill.com Now they have a lot of videos on Youtube that might help with any of your grinding questions. I see they also have a store on Amazon which is a big step up from buying it by mail which was how we first bought ours.

I appreciate this, Donw. I might be asking some questions and I appreciate the Youtube suggestion.

Sorry for the double post but thinking about your new adventure got me excited as it takes me back to our younger years and a growing family. Here is a video where she goes through cleaning wheat before grinding and then the process of grinding several different grains. https://youtu.be/SOGZBcODOzQ Now she does a long segment on cleaning but we were lucky that our church sold pails of already cleaned wheat so we could skip that part. If you are looking for a source for clean fresh berries here is a link to one place with a good reputation that sells triple cleaned berries in 43lb pails. https://pleasanthillgrain.com/food/g...ries-red-white
Good luck on your journey. And I wanted to say also that the KoMo grinder you bought is top notch. Good choice.

I have a vintage Magic Mill like this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/166365424452

I haven't used it in a couple of years, need to change that. It works well but takes up a lot of counter space and it is heavy.

That’s pretty nerdy, Brian. And, you know me, I’m into all things nerdy. Following to see how this works for you.

Yeah, one of my good friends was making fun of me until he found out I could grind buckwheat, and then he ordered 2 lbs of whole buckwheat off of Amazon in anticipation of me grinding it for him so he can make his family pancakes..."Cluck cluck cluck said the little red hen..."

I mill grains and have a stainless grain mill with an electric drill attached - but it mostly malted barley and mostly for brewing beer!

Back when I used to all-grain brew I ground my own grains.
It was good having control over the size of the grain.

              Ah... the good ol' days.

I have used one of these for 3 years they work very well for wheat & rye just need to adjust the grind as the stones wear down. Have not yet needed to replace them & wont for several more years they wear slowly.

              I'm following along as well...
I've been slowly losing weight (down 30 lbs looking to lose another 40 or so...)
But I sure miss bread, and I can't eat bread if I want to lose any weight.

My wife has been making some noise about wanting to mill her own wheat. I'd be curious how well this works for you.

I mill malted barley for beer brewing, buying it in 55 pound sacks, but the malt mill I use for that has 2 rollers set to a 0.039" gap. The idea of milling other grains for baking is most definitely interesting to me. I'll be watching to see how this works out for you.
