Bakers rejoice! It’s time for stollen!

I made some candied lemon and orange peels this afternoon as an intermediate ingredient in stollen that I will make and bake later this week.

A few of these little gems may find their way into some cocktails too!

That brings back fond memories. My wife and I made stollen several years in a row when we were younger. These days, if there is an afternoon in the holiday season that works out, my younger daughter and I make the King Arthur Cinnamon Star Bread. It's perfect for two OCD nerds working together.

      I agree. That’s a great looking recipe.

Nice. My mom made it every holiday season. She’d make about 15 of them in one day so she could give them away. So good. Very fond memories.

I make about that many for the entire season (mid November-twelfth night) but not at once. We keep about half and give the other half away.

What is stolen? Isn't that what landed Panhead John in the clink for his second tour?

I’m sure he’s been in the clink for numerous infractions the least of which is stollen.

i had to lookup stollen as I had never heard of it before. Not a lot of German influence where I grew up.

Growing up in the south I saw lots of fruit cakes, but very few people actually eating it. It’s the truth that I saw relatives take one of those fruit cakes in a can they had been given immediately go put it on a shelf to give to someone else next Christmas.

Oak Smoke Re-gifting of fruitcake, especially those bricks from Claxton, was an art form and done very skillfully to avoid re-gifting back to the original giver. That would have been scandalous in the south.

“Why, Eva Mae, deah, this is the vaaary same fruitcake I gave you last week!”

The people best at it kept copious and meticulous notes of who gave them one in order to avoid such embarrassment.

In my memory, fruit cake was always the joke of the Christmas season...
On a par with the big tins of popcorn with the winter scenes...
A sure sign that the recipient's gift wasn't high on the givers priority list...lol

      Time to make some dough.

      About 1 hour ferment time.

      Shaped and panned for proofing.

Dang it, I thought I took a pic after they came out of the oven but I must have had a brain fart. I wrapped one to ripen for two weeks, a new method for me.

My wife is my biggest fan when it comes to stollen. She eats it along with drinking chocolate.

This is a new recipe I tried and it’s pretty delicious. I’m not a fan of marzipan so I use slivered almonds soaked in rum for the center.

Fruit cake was mentioned above. That’s another thing my mom made in bulk at the holidays. She would make them about now and the wrap them in brandy soaked cheese cloth, then foil. She would refresh the brandy every so often. It was really good. No regifting of this fruit cake ever.
