    Dry bean beginner

I'm going to place an order with Rancho Gordo for some Santa Maria Pinquito beans.

This is the first time I'll be working with dried beans. Do y'all have 1 or 2 suggestions for another Rancho Gordo bean I should include with my order?

What kind of canned beans do you like? The ones from Rancho Gordo will be similar, but better. Personally, I’d say pintos and since I’m a black bean fool, some kind of black bean.

cranberry beans, vaquero, and Good Mother Stollard are just a few that I like. Depends on what types of beans you like. Lots of white bean and black bean varieties available. They also have dried hominy, chick peas, lentils, and more.

You can't go wrong with beans...

Any of the beans they sell are excellent! The ayocote negro bean is really good! I’ve had a number of bags of these and love them for any type of bean cook! Cranberry, King City Pink, Domingo Rojo. And of course the pinquitos.

they are all great so enjoy whatever it is you end up ordering!

Just do what I did: pick beans at random until you hit the $50 for free shipping. Based on what I’ve liked from doing that, I’d recommend scarlet runners, Marcellas, yellow eye, black eyed peas, Christmas limas, midnight black…. I’ve made and enjoyed all of those very much. That’s a mix of black, white, red, small, and large. Eye of the Goat isn’t in stock very often, but if it is when you order it, I’d also recommend that one.

They’re all going to taste like beans; nothing is going to be, “OMG, I didn’t expect THAT!” Except, they’re going to taste like amazing beans, and they’re all going to be different, yet obviously identifiable as beans. I keep coming back to thinking of them like heirloom tomatoes, or Peruvian potatoes: they all taste very different from each other, yet they are all obviously beans/tomatoes/potatoes.

Two suggestions. Get his bean book as part of your order. And order some beans with the most reviews, which presumably reflects their popularity.
