Kidney Beans vs Red Beans and New Orleans

bbqLuv asked if there was a difference, and there is.

I have always used Red Kidney Beans. There weren't any small Red Beans in the local stores in Baton Rouge that I remember or maybe I just didn't notice them. From what I have read, the small Red Beans are not as tough, but the Kidney Beans are creamier and marries with the other ingredients.

So, those of you who make Red Beans and Rice, which beans do you use? I have seen recipes that call for either Red Beans or Red Kidney Beans, and just to add to the confusion, locals call the dish Red Beans and Rice no matter which bean is used.

Thanks. I would like to know your opinions.

Camellia brand is the best. It isn’t the size that makes the difference, but the color, The lighter the color the more they will cream up. The darker the color the more difficult it is to get the to cream up.

I find this to be true as well. I use the light color kidney beans, and I order from Camellia.

Here is where a person shopping for red beans might get confused, especially if they read a couple articles that state New Orleans recipes use Red Beans (but you can also use kidney beans.)

Oak Smoke That made me laugh.
I don't think we ever said, 'soda' or 'pop.' We just used the generic, "cold-drink" (pronounced coedrink). My next door neighbor kept an ice chest on his back porch with drinks on ice at all times. If I went over there, he insisted I go get a "cold-drink."

The real question is, Is Beanie Winnie made with Red Beans, Kidney Beans, or what?

Definitely not kidney, and probably not red beans. Inquiring minds want to know. It should be on the can if that is what was used.

Beans n weiners were a standard fare growing up. Usually a can of Van Camps baked beans w/a pkg of hotdogs cut up. As were link sausages and mac n cheese "Kraft Dinner" with a lil help from Velveeta. Had both meals on a regular basis.
