    Rudy's Sause Alternative?

    Hello All!
Long time lurker, first time poster (I think!)
I've loved Rudy's Sause from Texas for many years, but shipping from Texas to California is getting prohibitive. Does anyone know of a recipe to approximate that spicy tangy flavor? It doesn't need to be exact; I'm just looking for something with that type of flavor profile that I can make at home.

I can't help with the sauce, but welcome to the posting side of The Pit.

I am guessing that any sauce that says it is a Texas sauce will get close. I doubt you have Aldi stores in California, but they usually carry a Texas regional sauce.

I’d say Meathead’s North Carolina Lexington Dip may be close to Rudy’s.

Lexington BBQ sauce recipe is mostly vinegar with a touch of ketchup and pepper. Here's how to make authentic NC Dip BBQ sauce and mop baste.

or the East Carolina Vinegar, maybe with a little ketchup added in since it’s thinner to start?

Create your own amazing East Carolina vinegar BBQ sauce and mop with this simple to follow recipe. Tangy and spicy, Low Country vinegar sauce is great for finishing fatty pork and does double duty as a baste (or mop) for adding layers of flavor to the meat as it cooks. Because it is so thin, it penetrates deep.

could be a start for you at least, but either way these are both excellent sauces! My two favorites that I make!

I doubt very much that something this vinegary would come close to Rudy's...

DaveD I know it’s a bit more, that’s why I mentioned adding ketchup, thinking that would tone it some but still keep the tang.

And a quick search on the interwebs brings up this copy cat recipe. But if it’s tangy that you are after, give the Lexington Dip a try.

This is my copycat BBQ sauce recipe for baby back ribs - it is sweet or spicy. Great on ribs, chicken and I've even drizzled it over scrambled eggs!

We are also full on Rudy's Sause addicts, and I get it shipped here to Virginia regularly, it's something we're just not willing to be without. Yes, it's not cheap, but life is short, so we just budget for it.

That said, my lovely bride has in fact come pretty close with a recipe she experimented with a couple of times. I'll see if we can dig that up for ya!

Edit: The one she used may well have been the one that barelfly posted - will check back.

I have a Rudy's literally 10 minutes from my house. Been there once and it was surprisingly good for a chain. Think I'll take me a ride over there and git me some 'que

They're definitely decent. Spares and baby backs are quite good, brisket usually very solid (and they give you the choice between point, which they label "moist", and flat, which they label "lean"). But their pulled pork is only braised, it's not smoked, or if it does get a smoke step, it's early and relatively brief, followed by hours in liquid. Turkey is very good too.

I saw the difference and thought maybe it was Food Networks way of avoiding any legal issues with Rudy's. It does sound like an interesting recipe.

Original Rudy's is 2 miles from my house.
