Oktoberfest is the world’s largest folk festival, started in Munich, Germany, in 1810. It has since become an international phenomenon famous not just for beer, but for bold, satisfying foods like grilled bratwurst, rich pork roasts, and warm potato salads. As the fall air chills, these dishes pair beautifully with the season—smoky and savory with just enough tang to keep things lively.

Want to celebrate Oktoberfest at home? From bratwurst and German potato salad to choosing the right beer and barware, our best Oktoberfest recipes give you everything you need.

Heck yeah!!!! Oktoberfest bier was my absolute favorite beer to drink! And my parent’s are in Germany right now, but going to miss the big festivals next month.

I will say….what’s the ketchup doing on that dang spread though???? ahahah!

Mosca - i looked up currywurst, not something my grandmother or dad has ever talked about, but not that we eat German food all the time. But I do agree seeing the ingredients that it may be currywurst, or dressed up ketchup 😂

I’ve only had it once, it was great. My name is German, but my culinary heritage is split between Eastern European and 1960s USA. I’d make it myself, but Mrs Mosca wouldn’t eat it, so that’s not happening.

I swear curry wurst is actually worse than ketchup. And yes, i did try it….once. 🤢

Love Oktoberfest and used to host an Oktoberfest party every fall but haven't been able to the last few years as I haven't had the time in the fall. I used to cook everything myself which was a lot but fun (had upwards of 40-50 people). There is a good German butcher/store in NYC that I would buy all the sausages.

Below is what I used to make for my party if anyone is interested:

Soft pretzels with 2-3 types of bavarian mustard
    Obatzda
Flammkuchen (not bavarian but a good appetizer)
    Landjaegar

Smoked bratwurst (and then served in a bed of sauerkraut)
    Grilled nürnberg bratwurst
    Knackwurst
    Roasted chicken (oktoberfest style)
    Kase spaetzel
    German potato salad
    German cucumber salad

Hopefully I can bring it back next fall

I have been to the Munich Oktoberfest, and the Munich Christmas Market, as a young teenager. I actually enjoyed the MCM more - probably because they were both school trips and so I didn't have any drinks.

I was in Germany for the the March Fests but not Oktoberfest in 1991. Love me some Marzen/Oktoberfest bier!

I went to Octoberfest in Munich in 1989. We had seats in the Paulaner tent. I set a new personal best for beer consumption (along with Weiss Wurst). I'm glad I still have some photo's.

We visited Dachau the next day. Big mistake.

Went to quite a few Octoberfests while in Munich over the years. The food in the Hoffbrau tent, building, was unreal. I can't begin to tell you how many rotisserie ovens they had doing whole chickens. Servers would bring baskets full of Artisan sandwiches, giant fresh baked pretzels, clusters of radishes and other goodies. Music was great, traditional German music rotating with a rock and roll band. About every hour the rock band would play. Hey baby I want to know o o if you'll be my girl. The entire mass of people would be standing up singing and dancing. They served beer too.....
