Typhur Sync Gold Dual Wireless Probes Review, by Bill McGrath

Our review of the Typhur Sync Gold Dual wireless thermometer turned up accurate results, and it's got a user-friend app. It's the company’s latest entry into the rapidly evolving wireless thermometer market. It features a base unit that acts as both a signal relay and probe charger. (There is a four-probe version that has the same features as the Dual.) In addition to the boosting and charging functions, the base can also display and control the operation of the system, obviating a smart phone. Recommended!

Glad you guys reviewed it, prior to a few weeks ago only reviews I had seen were from influencers which aren't exactly always reliable.

Can you comment on two things:

      1. Since the thermometers store in a cavity in the unit, can bits of food residue on the probes end up inside the holes and effect charging?
      2. Can you comment on the app and how it compares to the industry leaders such as Combustian and Fireboard?

While I do not own this brand, I do own the FB Pulse, the Thermoworks RFX and the Combustion Inc wireless. I have owned the Meater & Meater 2+ and the TempSpike. ALL of these use a similar method for probe charging using a cradle. ALL require cleaning of the probes before storing. I use a scrubby sponge. Actually, the harder thing to clean is the smoke residue that coats the exposed parts of the probes, obviously when used in a smoker of some sort. Food is very easy to clean off.

Try the Mr. Clean white kitchen sponge. Non abrasive n tackles carbon/smoke build up.

sos2979 I'm weird - I know it, but this my usage habit:

For anything I am going to reverse sear, like steaks, chops, etc., I like the RFX. The RFX heat resistance when searing over a very hot bed of coals, or my IR burner on my gasser, is top notch. Easy to setup a cook, although the App is pretty basic to me. I have had to reinsert probes occasionally, as they sometimes go 'inactive" for some reason. For the money, the RFX is very capable and provides what most would want - wireless monitoring of your cooks, although wired for ambient through the Gateway. Since most ambient wireless readings are problematic (lots of posts about that), needing to use the gateway's wired probe for ambient is no big deal to me.

For anything in my home oven, which I use a lot because my lovely bride does not like smoked food at all, I use the Combustion Inc. Turkeys, roasts, chicken, etc. I would use the CI over the RFX outside, but I find the smoke residue for low-n-slow cooks to be very hard to scrub off the exposed end of the probes. Also, the Gen 1 probes cannot handle searing temps. I really like the way the CI App displays the combined probe readings and graphs over the Thermoworks App. Charging the CI probes and Display is another not-so-great implementation as they each require their own USB charger connection, so if you want to charge 2 probes and the Display, you need 3 simultaneous chargers, or charge them 1 at a time or whatever combo. The FB probes require only 1 charger connection for however many Pulse probes you have (they are stackable), and the RFX Meat probes have a battery in each probe cradle (can't remember if they are AA or AAA), so they are pretty much ready to go unless the battery has died.

I LOVE the Fireboard App, and before wireless probes came out, it was always my "go to". I have to say I am disappointed with the Pulse probes. Oh, they work fine, but they are the thickest and weirdly have an oblong shape versus round, so they make a bigger hole. Plus, they only have 1 food sensor, in the tip if I recall right, versus RFX and CI that have sensors along the length of each probe. However, the App has so many useful features (adding notes and pics to cooking sessions) with all that data and capability available even if no smartphone or iPad, using whatever web browser you prefer.

Not a well organized response, I admit, but hopefully helpful for you.

Thanks for the response. I have always been a Thermoworks guy so the RFX has always been the one that appeals to me, but getting info from someone who has used many is always good.
