My first time lighting my new gasser, at least I had a bic torch in my left hand. For some unknown reason the igniter was not doing its job. I was a hair too long employing my left hand and a huge boom went off. Kim came out the back door and said she expected me to be in the neighbors yard.
Second one is the best, very new to smoking, started with briskie. My smoker was the second shelf of the old gasser. It was way behind sched for a cleaning. My new temp device told me the flat was done but the point was at least 15-20 degrees behind. No worries, I'll just whack the flat from the point. Yep, you guessed it. Instant ball o fire. I remained calm and shut everything off. After a forced 20 min rest we ate. Surprisingly, it was pretty darn good! Wish I had a video of that one.
I have to say I have eaten every attempt at Q and not only learned a lot, but enjoyed every outcome.

I agree. Two of my all time fave BBQ Fail stories are in that topic

This one from troymeister : https://pitmaster.amazingribs.com/fo...3821#post53821

And this one from Lost in China : https://pitmaster.amazingribs.com/fo...1731#post81731

Those two stories are so well written and so funny. The best part was no one was seriously hurt in the two mishaps.

texastweeter Well, you asked for it! Some of these folks make the BBQ Fails guys look downright Mensa-ish. It’s 10 minutes of colossal turkey failures.

The Missus just had a turkey fryer dream last night. We'd better watch this!

Oh does this bring back memories. A young man and the first year into my marriage, I took my wonderful new bride camping. As she was laying out the sleeping bag and stuff in the tent, I went and started the fire in the firepit.....using white gas. "Is it really that volatile" I said to myself. And I soon found out it was . Singed the hair on my arm and eyebrows. Learned this lesson well.

Wisdom is often born out of experience.... Hoping nobody was seriously injured in the film clip.

Well. Not watching any more of these.

The instant we finished the videos, I opened up a new, loaded peppermill to use on some cut up garden tomatoes. It broke on the first try, spewing ball-bearinglike peppercorns all over the floor, the counter, and the tomatoes.

                      We ate the tomatoes anyway.

Done that before, without anything breaking.

So, what is happening in most of these turkey fry vids? Some I see the oil spilling onto the fire, but some look like the oil is catching inside the pot. I can see popping and such if the turkey is really wet, but what is going on here? Combination of wet and too big for the pot with overheated oil?
I know what can happen if you put a frozen turkey in the oil.

What amazes me is in almost every case as they start to lower the turkey just a little, they see the oil spilling over the edge and back off a bit. Then they _still_ decide to just drop it in anyway.

I know! And several of them were using turkey pots way smaller than they should have.

So, after dealing with burn bans in another thread, decided should watch this. Clearly some Darwin Award winners here.

Could not watch full turkey fiasco film.

1970's, Dad shot a wild turkey. With his 1893 Winchester 12 gauge, designed for black powder, 2 5/8 chamber, jamming in 3 inch shells, but that is another story.

Guy in town had told him about cooking in hot oil. So, used Mom's pressure cooker, biggest thing we had. Lots of oil, on electric kitchen stove. This was before all these new fangled turkey cookers.

At some point Mother was muttering something about you guys better be careful.
Well, it worked out. Great turkey. I later bought a proper set-up, used to do it on a sheet of plywood in the yard. But I am done. Too dangerous, clean up is a pain, have better cookers now.

Not really a nightmare BUT I rarely use my gasser (Weber Spirit)...but last week I did use to keep a few things warm. Anyway, I evidently left it on a low setting and emptied a fresh propane tank in the process.

                          No drama, just wasted propane!
