    Rapeseed Oil

It is the progenitor of canola, which was developed by the Canadian government, genetically modified to lower some of the acids in rapeseed. Toasted rapeseed oil, produced in China and a popular oil there, is available thru The Mala Market in Nashville. It is aromatic, nutty, not neutral like canola. I ordered 1 bottle. Really like it, to the extent that I have ordered and received 3 more 900 ml bottles. Cant find rapeseed in my area. Do not confuse with grapeseed oil. Learned about it from Fuchsia Dunlop's writings.

Thanks for the info. What applications do you intend it for?

Using it in lieu of canola and sometimes olive oil. Stir fry. Currently making drunken beans with it, ecowper 's recipe.

A few years ago rapeseed oil was being touted as the next great discovery in automotive lubricants. It was said to be able to be made into an automatic transmission oil that had no equal. Who knows what went wrong there.

Hmmmm… what is this? Rapeseed is known as Canola in the US? I believe the explanation yakima provided. So what the heck is All Recipes talking about?

Rapeseed oil is produced from the seeds of the rape plant, a yellow flowering plant belonging to the mustard or cabbage family. There are two main types of rapeseed oil: industrial and culinary. Industrial rapeseed oil is mostly used in chemical and automotive industries, and is high in erucic acid, a compound that may be dangerous to humans when consumed in large amounts. In the United States and Canada, culinary rapeseed oil is known as "canola oil."

It gets confusing because Canola is a rapeseed cultivar. The oils sold here for cooking are labeled Canola because that is the plant used to make the oil. For whatever reason, other countries use "rapeseed" on their labels.
Rapeseed was banned in the US for consumption by the FDA. I guess Canola was approved.

Rapeseed oil was banned by FDA at one time, but isn't any longer. There were some studies, IIRC, that the high erucic acid was a harbinger of cardiac disease. The newer formulations have decreased the level of high erucic acid, I don't recall the limit, but that lower level oil is sold here as canola.

The Mala Market site says their rapeseed is a low erucic acid, non-gmo strain. Mechanically rather than chemically processed. Canola ic chemically processed.

This product is so Chinese, that Mala Market has to stick an English label on it.

I am inclined to propose that you line up a ton of shot glasses with olive oil, rapeseed oil, and whatever else you have stashed among your piles of ancient cookbooks. Tell us which one makes you feel youngest.

STEbbq. I actually have little Dixie cups for olive oil tastings. And for vinegars, especially balsamic.
