aka, A soup for ringing in the New Year!
Sunday cooking sections from the newspaper is where I learned how to cook, even if it was completely by rote. If I were to make this tomorrow, I would use chicken broth instead of beef broth, and mix some colored bell peppers in for appearance. Looking at it now, years later, I can see this is a zipper recipe: you can zip in any beans you want, and pretty much any vegetables as long as they don’t clash with each other; you could mix mirepoix and holy trinity vegetables and it would be pretty excellent. Toss in a zucchini. Etc, etc, etc. Also, any meat; chicken, ham, pulled pork, all would make a great soup.
