Cuban Sandwich Loaf . . . As Close to Authentic as I've Gotten

Love Cuban sandwiches, but grocery store bread just doesn't get it. After some trial and error, this is quite good. Its not La Segunda, but I don't have to drive 80 miles to Ybor City to get it either. Not counting overnight pre-ferment, takes about 3 hours.

You can make the bread substituting Crisco or butter for lard, but then it will just be bread.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!! After moving from Tampa back home to Birmingham, my quest was to find genuine Cuban sandwiches. I found two places with legit Miami/Cuba connections and a local BBQ place that does a decent knock-off. The only thing that kept me from making them was the "right" bread which, when you mentioned Ybor City, you know what I mean. Going to make this soon.
Care to share your recipe for the rest of that delicious-looking creation?

Nothing complicated about the recipe. Pulled pork, ham, salami, Swiss cheese, dill pickles, mustard, mayo on un-toasted bread. Put sandwiches in a hot skillet and "press" by weighing down with a heavy cast iron skillet. Toast one side, flip and repeat. Eat.

I just go to the Publix down the street. Im in Miami, so nobody there really speaks English anyway.

Also I think Tampa has it RIGHT. Salami belongs on a Cuban Sandwich. In Miami this is controversial, but the way I view it if you are going to use SWISS cheese might as well use ITALIAN salami! I mean.....ehhhh whatever

+1 on the salami. But "Cuban" bread at Publix here in tourist trap land ain't.

johnec00 I refuse to order an empanada at ANY PLACE that calls them "turnovers".

Because my week is turning into too many interruptions, it looks like I will purchase my bread this round. We have a place called Porto’s here in Southern California. They do not disappoint. And I tend to be kinda picky.

                theroc what say you?

And then the week went crazier and didn’t make the trek to the Cuban bakery.
