After 45 years of grilling/smoking/BBQ...am I nuts?!
I've run the gamut of cookers, always learning, but never as much as in the past few years on Amazing Ribs and now on the Pit. Thank you all!
Now to my nuttiness: I'm thinking of replacing my Primo XL with a Camp Chef SmokePro SG. My wife thinks I'm wacko, as always when MCS kicks in. I'm eagerly awaiting Max's review. Your thoughts?
First time to post on this forum after some time of lurking. (Full disclosure, I also have a PBC, and a Weber Go-Anywhere (for what that's worth).
Follow-up -- I am pretty sure I would also want to add the Sear Box to the SG, as I'm not at all convinced yet that the slide and grill feature would be all that hot (so to speak).
Scotch: Current favorite- The Arran (anything by them), Glenmorangie 12yr Lasanta, sherry cask finished. The Balvenie Double Wood, also like Oban 18yr, and The Glenlivet Nadurra (Oloroso sherry cask finished) among others. Neat please.

Agree with all here Huskee, Spinaker, EdF, ComfortablyNumb, Mr. Bones. "Replace" can not be confused with "repurposed". i.e. I purchased a PCB and a Weber kettle and repurposed my vertical gas smoker. That is a 2fer.

Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.
Being new to this area of smoking and whatnot this site included. My answer: Keep the Primo XL! I bought a Rec-Tec 680 pellet unit. I just use it as a smoker and an oven at most. I will ALWAYS sear on my Weber 22" charcoal, stove top pan or broiler before I go to my pellet fueled unit to do the job. Please avoid a replacement of the Primo; I bet it can sear really well.
If smoking just fine on your current setup. Awesome Man!
More relaxed, much, much more relaxed? Get a pellet unit.
It will still be an awful lot of fun micro managing your smokes and temps either way. I know I do.
Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
There is certainly nothing wrong with having a Camp Chef and a Primo XL. If you have a large crowd, you can use both at once!
I don't really have MCS. Every time I start lusting after a new cooker, I think about where it would go and how much I would use it. I added a Weber Performer 22" to my LBGE, and while I love the Weber, I use the BGE about 75% of the time. I use a Weber Smokey Joe about 15%, for 2 burgers/2 dogs type meals, and the Performer for the rest.
Started Low-N-Slow BBQ in 2012. Obviously, it's taken hold (in chronological order:
1.) A pair of Weber Smokey Mountain 22.5's
2.) #LilTex, a 22" Expensive Offset Smoker (looks like a Yoder Witicha)
3.) #WhoDat1, a HUGE Gravity Fed Insulated Cabinet Smoker (cooking chamber 3'x2'x6')
4.) A Full Size Commercial Dryer/converted to Vertical Smoker.
5.) Jambo Backyard stickburner (my FAVORITE Pit so far)
6.) GrillMeister, a huge 24"x48" Adjustable, Charcoal Grill from Pitmaker.com
7.) 22" Weber Kettle with Slow-N-Sear
8.) Vault insulated reverse-flow cabinet smoker from Pitmaker
9.) BarbecueFiretruck...under development
10.) 26 foot BBQ Vending Trailer equipped with HUGE Myron Mixon 72xc smoker is HERE, Oct 2016!
11.) Opened www.PaulsRibShackBarbecue.com Food Trailer officially in March 2017
12.) Austin Smoke Works 500 Gallon Propane Tank Offset Smoker, named "Lucille" as travel pit for PaulsRibShack, Oct 2018.
12.) Opening Brick & Mortar location at 4800 Nelson Rd, Spring 2019. Had a pair of 1,000 Gallon Austin Smoke Works pits, both in RibShackRed for our new place!
Fabulous Backlit Thermapens, several Maverick Remote Thermometers (don't use any remotes anymore), Thermoworks Smoke, Other Thermoworks toys, Vacuum sealer, lots and lots of equipment...
I'm loving using BBQ to make friends and build connections.
I have #theRibList where I keep a list of new and old friends and whenever I'm cooking, I make 1 to 20 extra and share the joy.

Thanks forr the input. I do have a little bit of a space issue, according to management. Not sure how much I would use both, but definitely looking for a more relaxing aproach. Searing would definitely be an issue without the sear box, I’m thinking.
