Wood Pellet Grills Are Creating Barbeque Rock Stars

Thought maybe some of you might be interested.

Pellet grills only comprise five percent of overall grill sales in the U.S. but all of that is about to change, according to the handful of leading manufacturers I spoke to, as they say it’s now the fastest growing segment in the BBQ industry.

Was just going to post that. The comments about removing the middle man helped improve the product was really interesting. Retail is definitely changing.

I can't imagine any thing easier or better for someone new to grilling to use than a pellet grill. Once I saw one in action there was no turning back to gas or charcoal for me. They should significant sales grown in the next 3-5 years.

There is definitely a downside to internet only sales. Grilla Grills is literally 20 miles away from me, and I had never heard of them when I purchased my GMG. For my first purchase I definitely needed the help provided by people at the brick & mortar. When I purchased my 2nd one I didn't need the brick & mortar. I had experience and knew what I wanted.

Pellet is insane. Ole Hickory CTO DW would still be my dream go to.

Good read. I may get a pellet grill eventually, it sure does make things easy. More likely to get a PBC this year though, mostly for ribs and chicken, due to the fact it costs half of even a cheap pellet grill.

DWCowles that sounds like s pretty good deal, assuming shipping doesn’t kill us. I will PM you, after seeking approval from SWMBO.

Love my pellet grill, but miss the searing capability. If I only had one cooker I think I would want something like the camp chef that can add a sear box.

Nothing is perfect. My second pellet grill is a Memphis with the searing capability. It works well enough but is a bit of a hassle waiting to heat up to searing temps plus changing out the grates takes a bit of fussing. When I use the GMG Daniel Boone I don't even try to sear. It really isn't designed with that in mind. Both grills have turned out some simply spectacular food.

I had a propane smoker, made great food, but I hated tending overnight on long cooks...water running dry, wood running out, etc. I now have a Blaz'n Grill Works Grid Iron and now I get all the sleep I need! I still have my gasser for when I need things seared...pellet grills just don't get hot enough. Not complaining, I have room for two. I still think the best smoke comes from a wood fire, but my interest doesn't lie in tending fires all night...I have opposable thumbs...

Pellet grills are great! I own a Traeger Pro 22 and it is a really fine cooking machine. The best part is the food that it produces tastes great. However, it's just one of many grills and smokers that I own.

Great article thank you for sharing. I think it is funny to consider a pellet cooker a starter. Does not matter what you cook on if you can't cook in the first place and to prepare good food is not easy. The start up is easier and you do not have to tend the fire but you still have to prepare the food....

I think a Pellet Grill is a great starter for low and slow BBQ. It is so easy compared to an offset or learning how to manage tempts in a charcoal grill. As an actual grill it is a challenge.

This is so true RE the prepping and preparing food. Its funny, i went the other way, charcoal hardliner and only fairly recently got my pellet. Love it. Two young kids, busy job etc. Pellet is a godsend that lets me cook a ton more than if i just had charcoal. I can see it being a starter but maybe less so of a gateway...if that makes sense.

Unlike…I get it, but some of us wouldn’t cook as much if we had to sling logs every cook.

I was thinking the exact same thing. It is interesting to see the trends in cookers and the way barbecue is now prepared. At the end of the day though, it ain't about the expensive cooker, but the skill of the cookie!!

Amen, Mr. Troutman! To the best of my knowledge, the HPBA quit doing their surveys of what's sold in BBQ about 10 years ago. So there aren't hard numbers on sales anywhere!
