Grid Iron, ash all over the place

I love the way it cooks but now i am getting ash all over the place and even on the outside, blaz'n has no idea what to do. Tried 5 different brands of pellets and everything i could think of. Someone else has a grand slam with the same problem, they swapped out the fan and the computer with no luck. Any help would be apprecated

I wish someone in the know would respond to this. I ordered a Grid Iron a week and a half ago. Not gonna lie, I was a little nervous doing so, as I had seen some complaints about paint and rust. But I decided to take a chance on it, assuming that there's always a bad egg or two when there are a good number of units out in the wild. Let me know if you find out anything else.

I would not worry, the Grid Iron is a solid unit and gives me great cook and even temps. I know this is a air draft problem I just need to figure out the cure.

I have a Grid Iron and have not noticed ash 'flying around', but yes, after long cooks, there is a significant amount of ash in the bottom of the grill. How does your fan run? Continuously? What temp are you trying to hold?

The ash at the bottom is normal, I will do 160-180-225. Sometimes higher but they are my normal cooking temps. My pulses like it should.

Is it possible to upload some pictures so we can get a better idea of what it's doing?

I have the Grand Slam and I vacuum out the ash and clean it up after every cook. The only time I've had any ash flying around was in windy conditions when I opened the lid to check temps, etc. I have noticed that Lumberjack pellets produce a very slightly bit more ash than the B&B (BBQ'ers Delight) and CandySueQ mentioned that one time. I believe it's due to the way the pellets are made, using more of the bark. The difference isn't that much and I still clean it out after each cook. I had to build a wind-break using some MDF and hinges to put around the hopper side of the unit and that helps when you're in the middle of a cook and can't just turn it around so the wind isn't blowing right in through the fan side of it. I have noticed a little paint coming off the burn pot, but I'm not concerned about that, you don't see it anyway and I haven't had any rust at all. I'm sure Tim at Blaz'N could recommend a touch up paint if it was a big deal. My only recommendation is to turn the rig so that the wind doesn't have as much affect and to keep it clean.

I created a leak at the fan using 1/4 inch spacers, did a test run for 5 hours no ash. I also did 2 five hr cooks after that and no problems. I did not vacuum the ash out after the 5 hr test, so all seems good now.

Can you post a picture of your mod? I got my Grid Iron yesterday, and during the burn in today I noticed a lot of ash flying around.

Thanks! Just so I understand, you put the spacers between the fan and the body of the smoker? Was this a solution that Blaz'n told you to try, or did you figure it out by yourself? And are you still ash-free?

OK, that's pretty much what I thought you were describing. I assume you are still ash-free? And did this change the cooking characteristics of the smoker in any way?

Nope did not change a thing

While I haven't had the ash problem yet, I have been following this issue and am thankful for the info, I will file it away for later if I need it...

It's so weird that it would vary from one smoker to the next. Mine has been doing it from the moment I lit it for the first time. Tim at Blaz'n told me it would go away after a few cooks, meaning that the ash would start sticking to the seasoning on the interior rather than flying around. But that doesn't sound quite right to me, nor does it seem like much of a fix for the problem.
