We have smoke!
anybody whose wondering if the smoke matches the hype. It does. Absolutely.
ive got it located under my deck right now but it will displace my old Traeger in the morning where it can exhaust better. It’s a lot of smoke!
The build quality is amazing. The FireBoard operation couldn’t be easier.
The stainless grills are pretty heavy duty. I don’t regret getting them. I thought they were expensive but I see why now.
The holidays were pretty busy but I've poured about 80 pounds of pellets through the LSG, and wanted to update everyone with my thoughts.
Most surprising, my skeptical wife who didn't want me to spend the money when we had 'a perfectly fine smoker' with the Traeger, changed her mind after the first cook. Now she brags about it more than I do!
The comments on build quality are true, maybe understated if anything. It is a beast and nothing is overlooked. The stainless grills are seriously heavy, they will outlast me for sure!
Seasoning it was simple, and much easier than my Traeger since there's really no nooks and crannies that you can't get or or have spray build-up. Cleaning is much easier. The firebox is easy. The deflector is super easy, just a scraper and vacuum and you're good to go in less than a minute. There's a lot less ash in the unit, cleaning the firebox really takes care of it. The stainless grill is pretty easy to clean. I use a scraper quickly then follow up with the wet Grill Daddy brush and it's ready to go again after 30-45 seconds.
My first cook was boneless, skinless chicken breasts on Christmas Eve as a test. They turned out really well. Surprisingly, they seemed over-seasoned compared to the Traeger. I did a comparison last week seasoning 4 breasts as normal, and 4 with 1/2 the rub then putting 2 of each on each grill. We all agreed the 1/2 rub on the LSG was the best tasting. The full rub was a little spicy and salty for me on chicken, but the kids liked it (still preferring the 1/2 rub). I can't understand why this happens but we do believe that it does make a difference.
Christmas day I smoked a salmon early in the morning for afternoon snacks. It turned out great! The turkey was unanimously considered the best we've had. It was spectacular. I found being about to turn the turkey to even out cooking made a difference. I probably have room to improve on that, but monitoring the cook on the fireboard app did show me how things were progressing and turning it showed the changes. I love the fireboard predictive analysis. It's a real help on Christmas when there's lots going on and since I started at 4am smoking the salmon, but 5pm I was getting pretty tired.
The salmon took longer than expected because the pit temp was lower than the fireboard temp. A quick read through the Fireboard controller instructions on LSG's site showed me how to offset the temp and the problem was solved. Great feature that I wish Traeger had (their temp and probes are off by 10-15 degrees so you can't judge doneness with the Traeger probe and app).
The smoke was much more intense, as expected.
The direct grilling option is fantastic. I reverse seared stuffed pork chops for New Years Eve with it. Normally I'd use my Blackstone for that, but sold it off (I used it for this and smash burgers only). This was easier, less clean up, faster and better looking.
