That smoke box doesn't look very big. I wonder how long it will run on a fill? And how often you have to mind it to achieve a heavy smoke flavor? Maybe all the convenience of a pellet grill and the flavor of an offset, just not at the same time?

technically you'd only need the smokebox for the first 2-3 hours to get an enhanced smoke result, but I'm hoping there's some other technology change here with either the frequency of the pellets or fan speeds or something, because their claims of better bark or whatever are hooey at this point it's just a front access/refillable Heavy D which any pellet owner could buy and use for their current grill.

- If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
Haha. I loved those teaser videos that made it look like they were dumping logs into the firebox of an offset. Now we see that it is actually dumping small wood chunks into probably 4" x 4" square smoke box that sits above the pellet burn pot...
While I am sure this will allow for a better smoke profile from a pellet cooker, I am still laughing at the difference of the reality versus the teaser videos...

No gas grill anymore
Weber kettle Premium 22"
Blackstone 36" griddle
Camp Chef Smoke Vault 24 propane smoker
Super 55 drum smoker from Smokerbuilder.com
"The Duk" Ugly Duckling self-built 80-gallon insulated firebox backyard offset smoker
"Big Bertha" 320-gallon trailer mounted offset smoker (also self-built)
"The Bronco" 26x48 110-gallon trailer mounted offset smoker (currently for sale!)
Numerous electronic thermometers from Thermapro, Thermoworks and Fireboard.
Personal firearms, home theater, home computing/networking, car audio enthusiast. Smoker building.
Pretty underwhelming and not very much information for a $1500 grill.
I just think I'm leaning more and more toward an offset or a Karu or something.

My gear:
22 Weber Kettle
Napoleon PRO Charcoal Kettle Grill
Broil King Keg
Traeger Pro 34
Napoleon Prestige Pro 500
Pit Barrel Cooker
Blackstone Range Combo Griddle
That whole smoke box thing is a joke. People have been using tubes and other things inside of their pellet grills pretty much since the grills hit the market.

Well no it isn't a pellet fired offset but isn't meant to be. Smoking on a pellet grill even with a supplemental smoke tube with pellets is still just pellet smoke. Yes the smoke box is small because it's not an offset and considering I've never used more than 4 chunks of hardwood for a long smoke on my Weber/SNS or PBC I don't see that it needs to be any bigger. I like the concept because it integrates with all the convenience of a pellet cooker for those that need that convenience.

Favorite beer: Anything that's cold!
Favorite cocktail: Bourbon neat
Personally, this new feature is meaningless for me. One of the things we like about the pellet cooker is the milder smoke flavor. We like just a kiss of smoke to let the flavors of the meat and spices shine through. If I want more smoke I have a smoke tube, that I have only used twice, as pkadare points out above. Also, my Weber kettle with SnS or Vortex can get pretty smoky. No, no upgrade in the cards for me.

Camp Chef Woodwind
OK Joe Bronco
Weber Genesis
Ooni Karu
Weber Kettle
My goal is to eventually have at least one of every style of cooker….. I have work to do. Lol!
Thermometers:
ThermoWorks Thermapen MK4
ThermoWorks Thermapen ONE
ThermoWorks Thermopop
ThermoWorks RFX
ThermoWorks IRK-2 Infrared
Maverick XR-50

Other Gear:
Megaforce 3000 Meat Grinder
Weston 7-pound sausage stuffer
Jerky Gun for making poppers. (Game changer!)
Amaz-N-Tube
Original SnS with drip n griddle
Weber Chimney
Fuels Used:
Splits/Chunks, whatever I can get. Usually B&B competition. Favorites are Cherry, Apple, Post Oak, and Hickory.
Pellets, Lumberjack.
Charcoal, whatever is on sale. Currently have a bunch of KBB. Will eventually try B&B. Use whatever lump is on sale in my Ooni.
Propane, Blue Rhino.
Rubs:
Usually make my own riff’s on Memphis Dust and BBBR. Also use Meathead’s commercial rubs and occasionally try something new. I like a couple from Tuffy Stone and Kinder’s. After several surgeries, I’m very sensitive to “spicy” stuff, so I need to be careful about heat levels.
I’m actually even more interested in it now. I’m not sold 100%, but I want more information. I think for me, it’s one of those things that I would want to test drive a little and get a little cook time with before I ruled it out from my stable. That said, I can’t afford anything new to cook with right now if I want to keep affording meat to cook. I’ll be keeping an eye out for a review here in The Pit!

This feels more like a new feature than a revolutionary new product - and to be fair, they kept it under the Woodwind brand . With that said, it seems like a pretty good differentiator...I already have a Woodwind, and while I won't be looking to upgrade, I would be excited for this if I was purchasing a new pellet smoker anyway.
And if I was choosing between GMG vs Camp Chef vs Silverbac, this would give Camp Chef the edge.

So, it's easy, and safe, to be negative about a cooker you've never used..............sort of a very repeatable human trait. For those who appreciate an actual review based on useage, here's a YT vid (first I've seen, though others are likely on the way) that is a reasonable comparison for a higher end competitor. Looking forward to Max doing his thing as well.

I've watched several reviews on YouTube: Jeremy Yoder at Mad Scientist, Smoke and Vine, Hey Grill Hey, and a few others. I have a PBC and a traditional Weber Kettle. Am seriously thinking of getting one of these to round out my collection.

everyone that's reviewing these with published videos is being paid to do so, even if the only payment was a free cooker. HGH specifically is sponsored by CC. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'll wait for Max or one of our fine pit members to put hands on. At the end of the day, it's a great idea (though CC is years late claiming they are the first). Smoke Daddy has a product that will do this on any pellet cooker, just can't top it off mid cook.
-
ItsAllGoneToTheDogs To be fair, often the cookers are provided to AR reviewrs too. We disclose that though. We still say exactly what we think, good or bad, irrespective of getting the cooker free. I would hope the others do the same.

I've noticed when big reveals are teased and then are finally made the vast majority are never impressed, most are armchair critics, perhaps unfairly. I for one think this is a fantastic idea, but it's only my personal opinion based on how I happen to use my pellet cooker. For someone who uses a pellt cooker but wants a little extra smoke (and I don't mean from more pellets, as in a smoke tube), this is a great idea. I have been putting wood chunks in my pellet cooker under the tray and on top of the burn box for a long time. This is a better way.

yep definitely a great evolution of the pellet grill, I just feel that CC is OVER selling how much better it is. Personally, the more competitive and popular the pellet world gets, the better it is for all pellet grill owners. More stores will stock pellets, pellets will remain affordable. Your preferred manufacturer may adopt some of the innovations or lower their price to compete. We all win when new products don't fail and instead raise the bar. RT has something coming in a few days I believe
