I will never argue with washing hands however I’m not for scrubbing cuticles, nails and under nails so much. Blow through a sack of onions, 10lbs of carrots, leeks, fennel and check your nails and smell your hands.

      i could go on...

Am I the only one who doesn’t rub in a rub. That protein was already killed once. Likely just me though.

I guess I coat with a rub...... I feel rubbing it messes up the perfectly even coat I just did....and then mucks up yer hands!

I also dont rub in a rub. It looks messy and uneven which annoys the hell out of me and i inevitably end up with more stuck to my hands

I hate having dirty hands and BBQ sure lends itself to getting messy. My issue is even with gloves keeping your hands clean I am still getting meat juice everywhere. It's on the knife, the rub jars, cabinet knobs, etc.

For a big job I like to use a plastic drop cloth under the cutting boards and pans. Keeps the mess contained. I will use gloves when prepping the meat and getting it in the cookers. Then i peel off gloves and clean everything with wipes.

Gloves don't protect you from the food, they protect the food from you. Right now you have between 10,000 and 100,000 pathogens on your hands. Handwashing is the most effective counter measure, but gloves are a great safeguard.

Wow! A hunnert thousand killer cooties on my hands. I may never cook or eat again. Then again, when I serve
my wife a meal I may introduce her to a few of my friends.
Before or after I work on my car.

I bought a big box of XL nitrile gloves (lined ones) at AutoZone a couple of years ago, after spending most of my 54 year life working on cars and just dealing with grubby looking hands that took a day or two of washing to look clean again. No more! I now use those gloves when doing any messy work out in the garage, and in fact, just depleted the box this week while refinishing a set of antique dining room chairs. I don't know why I haven't thought to use them when pulling pork, etc. I'll have to try that with some cotton under gloves if I can find those in XL. Unfortunately, the one-size-fits-most are usually too tight on my hands, so I may be back to the auto parts store if I cannot find XL sized ones online.

Hm. I heard once that you're actually much more careful when you don't wear gloves. Trust me, gloves won't save you from scratching your nose during the cooking process. And that's why gloves could just transfer bacteria from one item to the next.
So I just try to keep my hands clean when I'm cooking at home and then serving. Lots of hot soapy water on hands, utensils, counters...
Another story if I have nasty scratches/cuts on my hands - then I wear gloves (simply not to catch anything from meat).

You're right, jfmorris , gloves are wonderful to keep my hands from drying out. I would have to wash them a dozen times minimum between lighting the fire and getting the meat prepped and on the smoker. Not a good result at the end of the day with dry cracked hands/fingers when it can be avoided with a few pairs of gloves.

And the last thing I hope I would do, jack_gr would be to scratch my nose with a raw-meat-juice-contaminated glove. I'd probably faint if I realized I had done that! Yuck! I do like you, though--whenever my hands are scratched, I for sure protect myself with gloves when handling raw meat.

The nice thing about opinions on things such as these is that each of us does what works best for us in our own cooking situations. I enjoy reading what others do. I always pick up a morsel or more of cooking wisdom.

Yesterday I smoked 50 pounds of bacon, sliced it, and got 50 more pounds in the cure to be smoked next week. Between getting the grill ready, moving grates, handling the meat, rinsing the bellies, getting them on the smoker, getting it sliced and vacuum packed, rubbing the cure on, etc. along with dealing with the kids, getting dinner on the table, and getting the kids to bed I probably went through at least a dozen pairs of gloves. Much easier to rip off a pair of gloves and go take care of the kids than stopping to wash my hands every time.

And I really don't care for having dirty, greasym or sticky hands.

I did a bunch of poppers today. I make em, and freeze. Go ahead don't wear gloves. Love MH's humorous take. Be a man.
