    Neoprene Gloves

Just curious. Why do so many people wear gloves when preparing their BBQ food?

    #2
I don’t know, cuz I don’t. Maybe they are afraid of gittin little "bugs" with the sticky slime from the meat. Then maybe it’s to protect a manicure. I guess if I wuz workin in it all day I’d wear em. 🕶

LOL. I tried them once and tore them off after 5 minutes. I was worried I was missing some secret purpose.

Same here, old school I guess.
I know I should adapt and wear them but todays not the day....

Contamination, especially from the human to the food. The CDC has done studies of people handling food and found on average the person handling food conducts 9 activities an hour that should require a rewashing of hands yet this additional Handwashing only happens 27% of the time.(Funny that my iPad thinks this is so important that it keeps capitalizing Handwashing.) It is easier to change gloves than running to the restroom every 6 minutes on average. Human hands are filthy yet most people don’t know how to properly wash their hands so even the average washing still leaves a lot of germs and viruses.
Vinyl and nitrile gloves also provide some protection to the hands themselves. I use knit gloves under nitrile gloves for thermal protection.

FYI I wash my hands 87.4% of the time & always tween handling other stuff. When I’m in a restaurant I don’t cuz I don’t work there an only employees have ta, cuz ther’s signs sayin so.
I think HANDWASHING should all be capitolized. 🕶

Quick to pop one off to grab a door knob, rub jar, smoker handle. Also cotton liners let you handle hot greasy food without soak through and burn.

Like Donw and texastweeter said, and a pair of cotton gloves under them makes handling hot food easy.

Adding to what others have said above, I wear these Venom Steel Black Nitrile Gloves. They are 6 Mil, really thick and tear resistant. I put these over a pair of cheap cotton gloves and it gives me great protection against the heat when I am handling the food. I never use claws or forks to make pulled pork anymore, the gloves make that a way easier job. You can also grab warm grates. Or use them when your cleaning your pits. The main reason is to keep things safe, especially when curing or serving food. People at get togethers tend to prefer it as well when you are serving them food.

You can use them to work on cars or anywhere else you are dealing with grease and oil. The black color also hides sauce and what not on your fingers. (To me, the blue gloves and red rub or sauce make everything look nasty when your handling the food.)

I bought a box of those gloves when you recommended them a few months ago on another topic, Spinaker . They're amazing. I wish I had found them sooner. Thanks!

Because consistent hand washing is a Royal PITA. I wear gloves for half the day.

vegetables and leafy greens are also FILTHY. Not to mention taters and simply moving the containers and cardboard boxes around. I could go on...

oh and also it make me NUTS when I see people put boxes on their cutting boards then use them... ERRRRRR.....

ok now I could go on but...

As an FYI a cutting board is a
clean, pristine work surface. Keep the crap off it unless you plan to change it or do similar stuff before you change it.

          ok I could go on...

I know constant washing. LOL Years ago when I was running a kitchen I caught an employee out of the corner of my eye come in and walk past the sink. I yelled, "Hands!" And they stopped to wash them... What I didn’t see was the health inspector walking in. He asked the guy, "Is he always like that?" "Always!," was the reply. LOL

And don’t get me started on cutting boards either. Sheesh

I wash my hands WITH the gloves on. Does that make me crazy or committed? Mostly if I'm rubbing and handling other things (spice jars, shakers, etc.)

Also keeps my hands from getting dried out by constant washing when handling meat.

I like them for prepping ribs especially if I am prepping a lot of them. Otherwise I am pretty compulsive about hand washing. I go through a whole roll of paper towels drying my hands.

Also wear them when cleaning the grill or removing used coals. Greasy parts and nasty coal stubs makes for hard to clean hands.

Easier cleanup for me. I started wearing them after the sludge of making a bunch of hamburger patties was difficult to wash off. Now I wear them for everything, including working on my vehicles. Nothing beats doffing them and then a very quick wash & go.

During the winter, my hands get really dry and after washing and washing and washing, my skin starts to crack around the tips of my fingers and nails. So, gloves allow me to keep my hands in a little better shape, along with what everyone else has mentioned above.

Check out Septodont or Hu-Friedy hand care products. They both make products specifically for people that wash their hands often...like dentists. (Which is how I found out about them.) Good stuff.

I used to get something from one of my chef wear suppliers but I’ve not seen it for years...so I’m not sure if it’s still made. If I can track it down/recall the name, I’ll share it.

I am a compulsive hand washer, and wash them many times a day, any time before I touch food especially. Unfortunately, a year or so ago I started a new chapter in my life by developing multiple dermatological conditions at once (seborrheic dermatitis AND eczema), and my hands have been plagued by dryness. The dermatologist says "moisturize" and hand washing takes it all away. I need to start using gloves to save my hands on days I am brewing or cooking a lot. Or messing with solvents.

Yep I'm in that camp. If I didn't wear gloves my hands would be destroyed on every cook with as much as I wash them.

              #13
They're so nice to have for many kitchen tasks. I say I wear them as a courtesy to the people I feed. I even wear them when slicing and serving cake for dessert--not just to keep my hands from getting sticky, but to keep my hand germs to myself.

I also usually cover the rub shaker with plastic, a paper towel, or a glove, whichever is most handy, secured with a rubber band to keep from contaminating the bottle with my glove-covered meat-juice hands as I handle it. Then I still wipe down the bottle with a Clorox wipe before putting it away.

And HouseHomey , here's one of my pet peeves: when a chef on a cooking show blows on the food before serving it. I often see it when they're trying to get something off the serving plate or in a baking show when they've sprinkled powdered sugar on something and want to clear the excess away. Eeeeeew.

Ya know doc... Competition cooking is serious skill. Those people have some serious talent.

But oh jeeze you are so correct. I give them A
Pass in many cases though. How many of us habitually stick our finger in the frosting, whipped cream or fruit bowl.

I feel you though. People are paid to look for that and at least edit it out. The "pinky taste" gets me all the time. As if....

Love the idea of covering the shaker with plastic. I always get meat juice all over it then have to wipe it down with chlorox wipes.

Old Glory , yesterday I dropped the shaker up to its neck into a sandwich baggie and wrapped a rubber band around it. Worked great for 4 chuckies and a brisket flat.

I hate having dirty hands. So for tasks from cutting up birds, to applying rubs, I wear nitrile gloves. I wear them over cotton ones when handling hot meat on the grill or smoker.

Unless you have a germ free nurse putting the gloves on for you, you are going to contaminate at least one glove when you put them on. Then if that contaminated glove touches the other glove, that becomes contaminated. You have to use your bare hands to put the gloves on in the first place. One person mentioned wearing the gloves all day when doing a cook. That's just gross. Talk about germs. The only use I can see is when actually rubbing in a rub. The rub would will be less likely to stick to the gloves than to bare skin. I think that is the original purpose of these type gloves for BBQ. I don't see how it prevents bacteria transfer.

So, how did the germ free nurse get her gloves on? You might want to research the difference between sterile and aseptic, and while at it, sterile vs aseptic glove techniques. And, our friend HouseHomey stated that he wore gloves for half a day, not that he wore the same gloves for half a day.

Another point is that gloves are easier to wash clean enough to pick up something without contaminating it with the raw meat juices that were on the gloves, for example. There are no fingernail creases and crevices to scrub or little cuts for crap to get in to. Sometimes it's as much about keeping something out than about contaminating it.
