Upcoming review of best bbq grilling gloves

    Gentlemen and Ladies of Que

I am Rick Browne, the Dir. of Product Reviews here, and I'm working on a review of some of the best barbecue heat-resistant grilling gloves and need your help. Following is a list of the gloves I'm reviewing and I would much appreciate any positive OR negative comments you have on any of these.
Time is of the essence so please get back to me either here, or at my email address: [email protected] by Wednesday the 4th.

Here are the gloves I'm looking at (please do not add any new ones to this list, there will be future reviews if you want to send me a separate suggestion about gloves you/me can't live without)...

Leather - Ozero, Texas Irons, G & F Premium, Steven Raichlen's Leather gloves
Synthetic/Silicone - Pitmaker, Mr. Bar-B-Q, Rapicca, Man Law, Steven Raichlen's Insulated Silicone gloves
Kevlar/Cotton - Grill Beast, Grill Armor, Pit Mitt, Weber Grill Gloves

Again please share any good or bad experiences, I may use your information in the final reviews.

    ThankQUE,

    Rick

Hey Rick. I have a set of Steven Raichlen's gloves.
Hopefully these are the ones you're reviewing. So far I have no complaints. They seem well constructed, comfortable and they do fit my rather large hands. And they do reach up to almost my elbow. Click image for larger version

If figured a side convo was fair game. Those look comparable to HF gloves which are $5.

I don't have experience with many different gloves, but LOVE my pit mitts. Can pick up a hot burning SnS and carry it short distances. Only other glove I use is Griill armour. Shorter on the wrist - prefer Pitt Mitt.

    Hope that helps.

Just my two-cents on The Pitt Mitt,

I have used The Pitt Mitt for about four years now. I find that it performs well. I use it in the kitchen and around the Pit. I do a lot of cast iron cooking and restoration, in addition too outdoor cooking. I can tell you, it is great to have a good pair of gloves that can insulate your hands from the heat.

Here are a few things I like about The Pit Mitt......

The first thing I really like, is the liner rarely pulls out from the main glove. Anyone who has been handling a hot grill or piece of cast iron, will tell you that this situation is a cause for frustration. Especially, when you go to put your heat glove on and have the liner pulled out from the outer glove when you have something hot to move. When it does happen with The Pitt Mitt, it is pretty easy to fix. I have very large hands and this happens to me with about every other glove.

Secondly, The Pit Mitt has a longer cuff, so it saves you from burning your arm when working with an open fire, as you would with a stick burner, Santa-maria grill or even a kettle.

Finally, they last. I have put The Pit Mitt through the BBQ ringer. I have grabbed burning logs, hot grates, cast iron pans, griddles, grill pans dutch oven etc you name it. You can still burn yourself but I can hold a cast iron pan in my gloved hand for about 20 seconds when I take it out of a 450 F oven. (I tested this one a while back when trying out gloves)

I do like the welding style glove too. However, my main gripe with gloves like that is lack of dexterity. They do improve as you use them, but The Pit Mitt does not have this break in period.

Well, I bought these in the spring, and they are awesome to the point of being able to pick up a hot ember and move it back where it belongs.

There are a lot of companies making similar gloves. I have a pair and I will also say I can pick up red hot grill grates.

Here's my review on G&F : Poorly made. No craftsmanship. The right hand glove had the little finger slot sewn together sideways which prevents finger from going in wihout twisting the glove all around. And then the finger is all crunched. Has minimal heat prevention. There has to be way better glove for grilling, smoking or bbq gloves available.

I’ve had a pair of Grill Beast gloves for more than a year and I really like them. I’ve been able to move lit coals around. While that impresses friends I rarely need to do that. But I can move the rebar from my PBC without the glove heating up like my regular BBQ mits did. Also, I like it being a glove vs. a mitt. They are great gloves for moving hot things. What they are not is waterproof.

So one time a pork butt fell off the hooks in my PBC and I tried to grab it with these gloves on. The grease soaked right through the gloves. Not pleasant. My solutions were to 1) hook the meat better and 2) if I’m going to be around hot liquid I would wear nitrile gloves underneath or 3) I bought a pair of heavy-duty latex commercial-kitchen grade gloves for handling meats.

Additionally I like their customer service. I got an email from the CEO (I know it could not really him but still) asking how they were about a week after purchase. I replied I hadn’t used them yet but was going to cook that weekend. I got an almost instant reply asking me what I was goin to cook and what the recipe was (dry rub or glazed, etc.) Then on that Monday I got an email asking me how the ribs were and was I happy with the gloves. I was really blown away by that attention to customer service detail.

All in all I am very happy with them. I just assume there is a trade off with them being so flexible and not being waterproof.

I want a pair of gloves where I can pick up a hot briquette and move it. I can do that with the Steve Raichlen leather gloves, but then I have a seriously hot glove on my hand that has to come off NOW.

See the link I put in a few messages back. I have picked up glowing wood embers from the driveway and put them back in the firebox. Quickly, of course!

I have the grill beast gloves. Thy work incredibly well. My only gripe is that the liner is not made for very large hands. The gloves look huge, but once a large hand is in the liner, it's evident that it's too small for me.

I recognize that I have very large hands and these gloves would be perfect for the normal human, even a normal human with large hands, but for me, they are a struggle to get on and off. Not their fault, but it's my only gripe.

That said, I still use them.

I have the G& F gloves, I purchased them on April 5th. I think they are fairly well constructed, but I agree with JOE E that they have minimal heat protection. I like the extra long cuff, but that's about it.

Haven’t tried all these brands but styles yes. Leather/welding is okay but I haven’t found enough thermal protection in any of them.

The thicker put mitt type ones ones have much better thermal protection but water/grease goes right into them, so if something like hot oil splashes you now have that hot liquid trapped against your finger until you can set down the hot thing you are holding and get the glove off.

Frankly havent found any pair that bridge these two. I have to double up (glove and pad) and be careful with anything over 350F, especially CI. I’d be interested in alternatives if they exist.

I recently researched grilling gloves and realized that you really need multiple pairs, depending on what you wanted to use them for.

I needed a pair to pick up/turn food on the grill. For this, I knew I wanted something silicone, rubber, etc. for easy cleaning; cloth did not make sense to me. Also, I wanted a glove (not a mitt) that I could use to grab food so it couldn't be the "clown" sized gloves! Lastly, since I was only planning to handle food, which was not nearly as hot as a grate of burning embers/wood, it didn't need to be able to withstand intense heat. I ended up buying the $7.99 pair from Lowes. They have worked great. They will also work pulling food out of SV.

For picking up a hot grate, burning coals, or any hot pots/pans; I would go with leather or kevlar/cotton ones and only use them for this function.

After writing this, I realize this probably doesn't help Rick much at all!

I have a pair of Mr. BBQ leather flame retardant gloves from Lowe's. They seem to work really well with hot anything; coals, grates, etc. Like CowboyScott talks about, I'd like to have a pair of silicone or PVC gloves that somehow withstand heat and are easily rinsed off. I sometimes pull meat with my leathers and they get a bit nasty after a while. Probably no such animal but best of both worlds would be my choice.
