Kreuz’s Meat Market was also on the list. This place is HUGE! We walked in through the double doors and you could instantly smell the post oak smoking. We walked through the busy dining area to the Pits in the back half of the building. This was one of the coolest BBQ spots I have ever been. The whole room was at least 100 F as oak smoke floated in the air. The lights are tinged yellow from years of exposure to the smoke and heat. They had massive pits. They were about 48†deep by 20 Feet long with a huge, brick stack in the middle of the room that all of the pits fed into. You can see them in the photo below.
Unfortunately, Pit Master Roy was out but we did get that chance to meet Pitmaster James. James showed us around the pits and let us hang around while he was checking on the briskets and beef shoulders. (that’s right beef shoulder) We ordered some pork ribs, sausage and brisket. They wrapped that all up in some butcher paper along with some Texas toast and some saltines. The pork ribs were very very good. Again, they had little seasoning, but they were all about that smoke. The brisket was also very tasty, not as smoky as the other joints we went to but the flavor was well balanced with the simply Dalmatian rub.
The food was very good, waaaaay better than any BBQ I‘ve had in Minnesota. However, it was not as good as the others on this trip. They just have soooo much volume to crank out that it doesn’t surprise me that quality suffered just a bit. But this is well worth the stop. They were outgoing and more than willing to show us around. You can see in the pictures just how happy they were to be serving BBQ. This place is certainly worth a stop if you make it down to Lockhart. Oh, and don’t miss that smoked jalapeño sausage. It was to die for!

Heading for Texas in the morning for a week long road trip ending in Austin for the Lone Star Jam on saturday and sunday Sunday looks like a possible rain out, so we may head back early or hit some of the places you found. I dont think I could handle a full week of BBQ and I am a fan of the authentic tex-mex stuff, so that will be on the menu also.

Reminds me of when I did a similar quest in Augusta Ga area some time around 2005 during a maintenance visit. Had a good time checking out all things BBQ for a couple of weeks but unfortunately ended up with acid reflux. LoL. I've beat it and am able to eat anything now. All things in moderation.

I haven't been to Black's in a while. Do they still have all the great old pictures on the wall, especially the one of the town square area from about a hundred years ago? I had fun one time driving around trying to see how many of the old buildings were still around. A friend of mine who is serious about his amateur acting used to drive up from his home near Victoria to appear in plays at the Gaslight Theater there, near Smitty's and Black's and not too far from Kreuz's.Last edited by gcdmd; May 22, 2017, 04:15 PM.

Nice story! Thank you for sharing and the pics. Did they really make you and your brother sit on the opposite sides of the plane?

you can find bridge bats in a number of Texas cities, the biggest are probably Austin and Houston.
I'm lucky enough to have lived in the Austin area for a few years, you chose well! I am now a couple hours from the bbq belt on the outskirts of Houston.. unfortunately we don't have any "great" bbq here that I've found (I may have to fix that someday) but it's close enough that we make it that way occasionally. Every place that makes the Texas best list has their own strengths and styles, some have better brisket, others ribs, etc.. have to keep going back until you've tried everything
