Somehow, Google Maps defaulted to walking directions instead of driving. I guess I should start walking now?

MBMorgan I've lived at sea level (literally) my entire life, so this is pushing it for me lol.

Sounds like i might want to warn you guys. Years of swing and night shifts killed my circadian rhythm entirely. I am in the very early riser club, like 430, and I have a relatively hard habit for hotels. Pull on shorts and glasses, then mosey down when breakfast is out (usually 6, i find) for coffee. Slept in hair, no makeup, shoes perhaps but usually not. Carry said coffee back to room, to drink while I turn myself into the sparkly social butterfly that is my norm. Back to breakfast usually 7ish. If you see a middle aged woman with light brown/blonde hair drinking coffee and knitting, it will be me. Knitting is my zen, and how I get through travel.
edit: Oops, this was response to earlier comments, but I guess is at least in semi correct spot.

And you're likely to be the youngest member of the "breakfast meeting opener", so cheers to you....

Too bad you and Carolyn won't make it. I guess there's always the Colorado Meatup (🥸), though ... (which PJ really needs to get busy planning, soon).

Even though Saturday, April 12th is National Grilled Cheese Day, I am having BBQ at the Texas Meat Up! Maybe a grilled bbq cheese sandwich for a win win.

Just an FYI, but there’s 3 different Toll Roads in the area of our MeatUp. 1. Beltway 8…also called the Sam Houston Tollway or Parkway. 2. Hwy 99….The Grand Parkway. 3. The Hardy Toll Road. It’s not going to be a big deal because anywhere we go in the area, will not require you to use a Toll Road. Using one or more of them might save you a little time, but nothing significant. If you’re renting a car for the weekend, I’d suggest asking your rental car company what happens if you use their car on one of the Tollways, or what’s needed if you’d like to drive on any of them. If you live in Texas and already have some type of Toll Tag, the Toll roads here will accept them, no problem. If you use your own personal car on any of the tollways without an E-Z Pass, they’ll mail you a bill later for the tolls, although there’ll probably be a small surcharge/fine included with your Toll charges.

I have a sister, Cathy, who has a house in Spring. She’ll be there this weekend and will probably join us for the Thursday night dinner. Please, whatever you do, Do Not ask her about the infamous “dirt clod throwing” incident of 68’….

The occasional round hay bale downtown on I-10 right where you have to cross 4 lanes to go from Hwy 59 to I-45 is always fun too.

I checked on the car and tolls. I was going to bring my EZ pass, but Texas does not take that. All the cars with budget rental have transponders in them. If you don't use any toll roads there is no charge. On any day that you do use a toll road, they will bill you the toll and there is a $5 or $6 convenience fee also. The alternative is to just pay $11 a day, and all tolls no matter how much, are covered. By my calculation it's easier and more convenient to just let it sort itself out.

Save us some time....................how far did Cathy throw you?

If your rental is equipped with ez pass just make sure it's swung into the open position so it can be read. Your rental company will bill you later for the tolls. If it's a license plate reader the same would apply. Never had any issues with rental cars and tolls, they just invoice you later. Just again if your ez pass is in a protected cover open it up or it won't read.

Ours are (except for the really older ones) are a flat RFID sticker that sits behind the rear-view mirror. I didn't know this, but Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas have a reciprocal agreement that any of those tags can be used in any of those states. (I assume the Kansas revenue somehow gets back to Kansas, etc.)

We've even got our parking garages at the University hooked into the system so it uses your EzTag RFID to open and close the gates, which is quite slick.

Glad to see you landed that job as the Houston TV highway closure reporter. I hear there is a forecasted giraffe stampede schedule for this weekend on the major roads around Spring. Enjoy the Meatup while getting paid.
