    M grill owners experiences

    Good Afternoon,

I’m heavily considering buying the M36. Wanted to get feedback from current M grill owners. How has it held up? Any rust issues or other problems? I saw old posts about the glossy powder coating discoloring at higher temps, is this something all of you M grill owners have experienced? Would love it if you guys can post candid pictures of your current M grill.

Also any B2 owners here? I do mostly grilling so B2 is a much cheaper option, might make more sense.

I've had mine since the spring of 2022. As noted in a separate thread, the paint is definitely a problem. With higher temperatures, it is pealing all over. The grill itself seems to be fine. I've found it to be great for smoking. Have very much enjoyed it and, while still a novice, results have been great. What has been less positive is using it as a grill. Reverse-searing and using the sear box (or whatever they call it) has been pretty good. However, in addition to smoking, I wanted to use it for Argentine/Santa-Ana-style grilling - lighting a fire, spreading embers and direct-grilling, raising and lowering the grates. Started the fire in the main grill and it got so hot that much of the paint on the front of the grill burnt off. Seemed to get so hot that the front looked like it was burning through - although I don't think it was. Am now thinking about getting a separate, stand alone Santa Ana grill. Unfortunate that I may have to do this. So, overall, have enjoyed it but not sure I'd do it again.

Thanks for your honest feedback. Much appreciated. It’s interesting that you mentioned Santa Maria grill. I have a Santa Maria grill and I’m looking to basically switch over lol (we have the opposite problem). While the SM is fun, it’s very inefficient, not having a lid makes it more of a wild cook. I miss the controlled temp regulated cooks so I’m using my Kamado Joe more these days unless it’s a bigger cook in which I case I need more grill space and I end up using the SM grill.

Seems like paint is the primary issue? I contacted M grills, they mentioned that they stopped doing the glossy paint finish due to these issues and now are using the matte high temp powder coating. Not sure how much better that is, but should be better than glossy finish.

You mentioned grilling. I mainly do a lot of grilling, so this might be an overkill for me. But how efficient is the system
when you’re grilling? Are you using a chimney starter the light the lump charcoal? I do a lot of direct grilling so I like the adjustable charcoal grate more than the adjustable grill grate since I can still use the lid and regulate the temperature, take advantage of the convection heat. Do you find yourself burning through a lot of charcoal? I’m guessing you will need probably two chimney full of fuel if you’re using the whole grill space?

M1 owner here and am quite pleased with the product it puts out. I prefer using my M1 over any of my 5 grills/smokers because of its is versatility. Heavy as heck but holds temps steady once you get passed its learning curve. I love the adjustable grate. I have cooked in 100 degrees temps as well as 12 inches of snow without so much as a hiccup. When you figure out what vent settings you need for specific temps as well as the mix of fuel needed to keep them where you want them, M Grills will really up your game. As for the cosmetics, it looks used but not embarrassing or anything. Absolutely nothing a can of high heat paint can't handle. Two observations of mine I'll share. First, no one has ever, ever came over for bbq and asked me about the wear on the exterior of the pit ( I have not touched the exterior since I bought it other than wiping it off every so often with a wet rag). Anytime someone has opened that solid, heavyweight lid they always remark about the quality and feel of the grill and what's on the inside. Feel free to expand my profile pic to see close up the finish on my M1. It looks just like that today and that pic is about 2 or 3 years old. Hope that helps. 😁
