    Tri-Tip Supplier?

I live on the East Coast, in the Baltimore area. I rarely find tri-tip in my vicinity, and when I do, it is usually not very good. Anyone know a reasonable place to get good tri-tip? Thanks.

If you are a member of Costco and can talk your Costco manager into carrying them that might be your best bet.

It's funny how different things are in the east and west, here in Los Angeles, tri tip is everywhere, come holiday weekends the prices drop so low I'm forced to buy 5 or 6 and freeze them.

Here's my advice (for what it's worth) only use 'prime' or higher (like SRF) prime is a whole different experience than choice or the lowly select. Yes, your gonna pay somewhat more - but the payoff is incredible.

SRF has a 2.5-3 lb Wagyu for $79 dollars, sound steep? It's not, once you grill that baby you'll tell yourself, it was the best $79 dollars you ever spent.

Never tried the SRF, with Costco prime under $8 / lb. It would be nice if they'd stop cutting tri-tips into "steaks".

Tri-Tip is a very west coast thing, for sure. Every grocery store, Costco and Sam's in my area carries prime tri-tip and my local butcher carries Painted Hills tri-tip (Painted Hills is a competitor to SRF). The mid-west and east coast, it just doesn't seem to be a big deal at all. But it is such a big deal on the west coast that over the past 5 years, the cost of prime tri-tip has just about doubled due to the demand for it.

If you are willing to pay for it, look at SRF and order from them. Or see if you can find a local butcher that sources from Painted Hills. My best suggestion is to look for a good butcher. They can either cut it themselves, or order it for you .... depending.

Go to Costco and look in the meat department or near the meat department for this package. This is preseasoned Tri-Tip and they are very good. Leave it in the cryovac package they come in. Cook them in the SV bathtub at 131° for 2 to 8 hours. Take it out of the cryovac packaging, blot it dry, apply some beef love and your favorite rub. Then sear it hot, hot, hot any way you can to give the surface a nice crust and then chow down.👍

Most Costco' nationwide stock this item and few people realize what it is. Most people have never heard the term tri-tip before unless they live in California.

Thunder77 I have an Exec membership at Costco. Cost is $110/year, but I get 2% cash back on all purchases, 3% at the gas pumps, plus 1-3% on ALL my costco credit card purchases. I typically get about $1000 cash back annually :-)

Breadhead course I grew up in Central CA, so knew what tri-tip was forever. It's what mostly got cooked at BBQ's when I was a kid, if someone was stepping up from hotdogs and burgers.

Breadhead no idea what the % of beef produced is prime. BUT I do know that Costco is the biggest retail purchaser of prime beef in the US. Which means they have a ton of control on that market.

If you have a Smat & Final near you... $2.99 per pound is their regular price on untrimmed Choice grade Tri-Tips. You must buy a 20 pound cryovac bundle of them though. It usually has 6 or 7 tri-tips per package.

I called this butcher shop for you: https://www.facebook.com/pg/Bowmans-...=page_internal Don't know how far it is but they said they have tons of tri-tips, never run out and want you to check them out. They said they get folks from Baltimore there all the time. I told the lady I talked to I was calling from CA and my name was Ted. Only half jokingly she said "have him mention that Ted from CA sent him in and maybe we can make a deal for him." HA! Judging by the photos of meat on their Facebook page I might be up there with a freezer box.

That link isn't working for me. What's the name of the shop and where located. I see Bowmans. I'm in the D.C. area and we don't get decent tri tip either.

Pequod - It is Bowman's Butcher shop. It may be that you have to have a Facebook page to connect. 3452 Churchville Rd, Aberdeen, MD 21001 Hours: Closing soon · 10AM–6PM Phone: (410) 914-5607. Here is an article about them: http://www.daggerpress.com/2015/10/2...-retail-store/ I'm can't vouch for them because I haven't been there. However, I was impressed with the Facebook page and I spent some time on the phone with them. If you Google Bowman you will find them. I don't have a Facebook account but my wife does. I Googled their Facebook page on my phone and it came up.

That's less than an hour drive from me. It would be well worth it if it is good tri-tip. Thanks for the tip! Pun intended.

Thunder77 - I had a lot of fun looking this up, calling them and talking to them. My daughter lives in Breadhead 's neck of the woods. I drive approximately 12 miles to my Costco and it takes me 15 minutes. My daughter texted her route home from work the other day. It said "12 miles est. time 57 Minutes" So I guess it is all relative. So if she drove the same 12 miles to the butcher shop it would be an hour. I guess that's my way of inspiring you to check them out. Pequod will be reading your review. On a side note - I love puns!

I just filled in the contact Costco link, why not?

western mass I've only seen tri tip once, ate quite a bit of it. When I went back for more I saw the "steaks" and kind of scoffed at them. I wanted the boomerang and asked the butcher and he said "sure I got whole ones in the back".

Two days later still done done w my tri tip fix, went back to same store different location and the butcher was a punk kid and he said that's "that's tri tip right there" pointing at precut all - different -size and shape tri tip. No thanks. he assured me there were no whole ines in the back.

I bet if I dragged him back there we could have found a couple whole ones.

Oh oh and they were prime, $4.99/lb. lasted one week.
