    Hello from Michigan

    Good morning, All!

Over the past two years, I contemplated purchasing a Kamado and delving into the world of BBQ. My uncle had a Kamado while I was growing up, and we were treated several times a year to his wonderful marinated leg of lamb that he always cooked to perfection on that very special grill. On top of that, homemade BBQ ribs are one of my most favorite things on this planet. In addition, I’m also just plain curious as to how the Kamado will do with Ribeye Steaks, etc. compared to my 2006 Vermont Castings Natural Gas Grill. Just to be clear, I have never before attempted to make grilled leg of lamb or BBQ ribs on any grill.

As of this posting, I have a Kamado Joe Big Joe Grill Series III on order, and it should be arriving by the end of next week. I have also purchased The Science of Great Barbecue and Grilling by Meathead.

I plan to purchase the following within the next few days:

    -Kamado Joe SloRoller
-2 Half Moon Cast Iron Grill Grates
    -Fireboard 2 Drive Bundle

I’m inclined to purchase the JoeTisserie as well, but I would like to get some guidance on that before making the investment.

My most pressing request for advice right now is this:

Is the Fireboard 2 compatible with the Big Joe Series III in terms of its automatic temperature control feature?

However, any and all advice or suggestions will be most appreciated. My thanks in advance!

And we always recommend the most expensive stuff too, even if it’s a piece of crap. 🤭

It should be if you have the right blower.

Upgrading the Ancient Kamado style grills are everywhere, hardware stores, sporting goods stores,  anywhere that sells bags of lump charcoal will most likely have a Kamado to sell you.   And so many to choose from!  Companies like The Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe and Primo bring to market dozens of op

The bundle I’m considering comes with a variable speed 20 CFM blower. My question regarding compatibility centers around using that blower with the Big Joe Series III.

Welcome from Missouri! I do not know about the Kamado Joe specifically, but the Fireboard temp control works beautifully with the big green egg. I did find that the Fireboard fan did not fit as tight to the egg as I would have liked because the fan had a flat plate and the egg is round. You may have a similar problem with the Kamado Joe. This, however did not prevent the drive from attaching to the egg at all. It just left a gap where a little bit of air could get through. That may not cause a problem for you at all. I switched to the Pit Viper and the plate is smaller, so allows much less air into the egg. Please know that I used the Fireboard fan for many years before switching, just accommodated the gap with adjustments in vents.

Just my two cents. Enjoy your Kamado Joe and your Fireboard, If something happened to my Fireboard, I would just order a new one without hesitation.

                    Thank you for this!

Do you know if the Pit Viper Blower is compatible with the Fireboard 2?

Welcome to the Pit from Dallas, Texas! I cook on a large Big Green Egg with a Smobot controller, so while each Kamado has its own variation they all cook essentially the same. Most tips will apply to all. As to the Joetisserie, I have often thought of getting one, but I have wondered how often I would use it. I think you would be wise to wait on purchasing one until you have exhausted all of the possibilities of cooking on your Big Joe. You will be amazed at the versatility of a Kamado. On YouTube Smoking Dad BBQ is dedicated to Kamado Joe cooking. You can go to school on Kamado Joe cooking until your cooker arrives.
