I always save the partially burnt wood at the end of the cook. What you have is essentially lump charcoal. I throw it in one of my metal buckets to smother the flames. I'll use it to start the next fire if I don't have any lump charcoal in the bag. Has saved the day a couple of times!

Did a chicken yesterday with cherry wood and small red potatoes in a pan under the chicken so they could cook in the chicken drippings. Both were really good.
