    Flat top replacing gas grill??

    Hello all,

I recently got a Camp Chef FTG600. I have noticed that ever since I have gotten it my Weber gas grill doesn't get used. Has anyone gone through a similar situation and realized the gasser might not be needed anymore? It's an older weber and I'm sure I could pass it on to someone who really needs a grill but wanted to reach out to the pit members to see if I'm missing something before I let it go.

Currently, I have the Camp Chef along with a Traeger, a 26" kettle, and said Weber gas grill.

So, am I missing anything special about the Weber gasser that I couldn't handle with another grill?

Nah, I think you got it all. Weber gassers are great, and if you do not need it, give it to someone that can use it. (Or sell it)

I found the same thing when I got my Blackstone.

Yeah, you can pretty much do everything you need on that griddle. Give the grill to a buddy. Then if you find yourself missing it, go for a visit and watch them deal with the flare-ups.

It’s been years since I had a gas grill, but I just recently got a new gas griddle and am loving it. I can’t see me getting another gas grill even if I had room for it. You’ve already got a smoker, kettle and the griddle. Looks like you’ve got most all your bases covered. In the past, I only used my gasser for quick cooks..burgers, dogs, steaks, pork chops etc. Hell, I can do all that and more on my new griddle, including searing if needed. Stir fry’s are great doing it on a griddle. I love all the extra room vs. using my wok.

You aren't missing anything. A flat top / griddle can replace a conventional gas grill for most cooks.

I've had a Weber gas grill for 20+ years, most recent a 4 burner Genesis II model bought in January 2019. Since I got my Camp Chef FTG900 flat top in June 2020, I would say 95% of my gas grill usage is the flat top, and not the conventional gas grill. The only thing I would cook still on the Genesis is bone in chicken, and I can do that on my Weber kettle, my kamado or my offset for that matter.

There are still times its convenient to have a conventional gas grill when you want to cook some chicken or something like that and don't have time to fire up charcoal, but for most stuff, the griddle is just perfect. Last two times I used the Genesis? I made FROZEN PIZZA on it, to keep the heat out of the kitchen in this blazing hot summer. Before that, I think a quick cook of some leg quarters. Before that, maybe 6 months it wasn't even turned on...

I ought to think about selling mine, but not sure I will get much out of it, even though it is just 3 years old. And I have issues giving up a grill. There are like my children...

Got a Blackstone for my birthday a couple of months ago. Have not used gas grill since then. Honestly don't know what I would use it for. I agree with you!

Sold my gas grill (used only 4 times) to a buddy and bought my Blackstone. I’ve never looked back

I haven’t used my Weber Genesis 3 burner for three years plus. Just too big for our needs. But I DO use my little single burner "mini gasser" very often. Great for a couple brats, doggies, or cheeseburgers, etc. However, I just got a 3 burner griddle a few weeks ago and I suspect things will shift over to that in short order.

Like Jim said above, I should get rid of the big gasser but it’s a older unit and although still in great condition, I don’t think I’d get anything for it. So it sits in my extra garage at the ready.

I've been messaging back and forth with DavidNorcross today because I'm looking for my griddle device for the new outdoor kitchen that's finally in the works. I'm thinking about the Grilla Primate which is interconvertible between griddle and gas grill mode. He has a Primate and loves it. I'm likely to go this route, but sounds like I won't spend a lot of time in gas grill mode. Just seems like with that and the LSG 24 x 48 Adjustable, there's not much of anything I won't be able to do.

I have the camp chef three burner cook top that came with a griddle that fits over two of the burners......I love this thing. Gives me the ability to cook several different modes all at once and takes up minimal room. And since I've been using this i haven't used the gas grill all summer and the wife has used it maybe twice!!

Well there you all go again. You’ve gone ahead and made me start thinking. I was actually looking at a blackstone at the Ace near my lake house this weekend and I asked myself if I would ever use one or what would I do on it other than burgers. The answer was not much. I guess I thought you could use it for certain things. Now I’ll have to revisit that. I have a Genesis that we do use often, especially my wife who does the majority of the weekday cooking. I do like that my Weber is natural gas and that I can and have used it in pouring rain and snow with no problems. Aside from my quick things, burgers brats and dogs etc We do use it as a second oven for potatoes and roasts and find that it works well when we need indirect heat.

Good to know what I’ll wasting my time on this week at night while watching the cubs continue to suck.

I think you may find yourself using a griddle more than you think. Think of most restaurants and diners. They literally do ALL their cooking on a flat top. And what I like about it? I can make something on the flat top that would take me a dozen pots and pans on the stove top in the house, and it takes at most 4 to 5 minutes to scrape and wipe down the griddle after a cook.

You may want to get a griddle that can be converted to natural gas. I know the Camp Chef's can.

After a lot of hemming and hawing, the wife and I went to Walmart today and bought a 36" Blackstone w/air fryers. Going to contribute my Weber Spirit E310 to a local charity. Still have my Weber 22" kettle and Weber Smokey Mountain. Think that's going to cover all my bases.

BTW, I mentioned Walmart only because they are about $200 cheaper on Blackstone than anybody else, although I saw some good prices at Tractor Supply.

Rotisserie chicken? Charring peppers? Mass quantities of corn on the cob? All easy to do without a lot of forethought or preparation.

With the FTG600 you do have a "conventional" gas grill, the grates are under the removable flat top. It's one of it's selling features for some folks. I'm with jfmorris, you'll only have limited call to use that feature, but it's there.

I got both a 36" Blackstone and Weber gasser with GGs. I prefer the gasser for quick cooks (regular burgers, dogs, corn on the cob etc.) even though I can do them on the flat top. With the gasser I don't have to re-oil after using it, it's ready to cook quicker and it doesn't gobble up as much gas.

Since I bought a Blackstone three years ago my charcoal/wood grill has been collecting dust and spiderwebs. My smoker still gets regular use, but almost everything I used to cook on the grill gets griddle treatment instead. Only thing I do on the grill anymore is tri-tip and steak.

And for that reason I’m planning to replace the traditional grill with a Santa Maria style grill.

Smoked a tri-tip last night and finished it on my Weber gasser - gonna be finishing it on my Blackstone from now on.

Would have to build a bigger patio and break in a new wife to get a Santa Maria grill (44th anniversary coming up in August, so the 2nd option is off the table)
