I've made big ol' 2" steaks in mine. Couple burgers too. I was surprised at how few coals it took and it sure was easy. I will also light half a chimney and spread them in it for searing pellet cooker steaks. I wouldn't ever want to be w/o mine.

That’s a steak? Looks like a big roast! Bet it was terrific!

Sure. When I was single and cooking for myself or, at most, one other person, it was perfect. I could cook with just a few briquettes. I have fond memories of that thing.

ID:	930551 I just did my first cook on my new SJ that I got about 10 days ago. I mentioned it in another post. With all the talk in another post about lighter fluid, or not, I got the compact chimney and Weber starter cubes. Worked perfectly. And the SJ was perfect for what I had to cook. Roasted garlic kielbasa from Costco. Just why I bought it. 👍

When I go to the cabin I take that Smokey Joe down by the river and there it stays for my whole visit. I put some weber starter cubes, briquettes, a lighter, and a little grill brush in a ziplock bag. When I head up to the cabin I stash the little guy in the bushes.

If I needed a small portable grill, the Smokey Joe or Go-Anywhere would be the way I would go. I had a propane Go-Anywhere a long time ago, and used it when boating.

At home, I have plenty of other grills that are at a much more convenient height, so personally don't see that I need a Smokey Joe. If one falls into my lap, I will certainly give it a spin.

We use our Smokey Joe for multi day tent camping. Otherwise not so much. Too many cookers : ) Not bad for the price!

Yeah. My tent camping days are behind me for quite awhile, now. But I get the draw of it for that. I'm thinking it might be good for doing some smaller cooks using much less fuel than in my offset. As I said above, I plan to try Blasphemy Ribs on it this weekend. I can also see doing Malcom Reed's BBQ chicken on it.

Is there a reason the top grate is upside down? Have you unknowingly shown us some sort of magical FireMan grate inversion technique that makes cooking easier and food taste better? 🤔

Oh and nice looking meal ya got there.

I notice the wood handle too, that goes back a few years.

Upside down grate? I do that with mine to give the GrillGrates and whatever is on them maximum lid clearance.

N227GB & HawkerXP it was my $5 score from a few weeks back. I did the grate thing for a misintentioned thing fer the 8” skillet.

Dewesq55 Are you putting the charcoal on top of the ceramic dish? If so why the ceramic dish? Why not just on that fancy metal dish with the holes? I'm curious to see this little guy in action.

troymeister - No, the charcoal goes on the regular charcoal grate. The ceramic dish functions like the plate setter in a kamado. It diverts most of the heat to the sides. This let's you use the whole center of the grill as an indirect zone - in theory, anyway. The dish with the holes has little standoff legs. Putting the ceramic dish on top of it allows there to be a space all around for the heat and smoke to get up into the cooking "chamber."

Ah ha...Now I see...Pretty good idea....All makes sense now...At first it seemed to me like an awful lot of work to put into a $35.00 grill...Now I se the logic. Cant wait to see your cook in it.

Three work is fun and the cost was minimal. I also can't wait to cook in it. Right now the weather isn't cooperating. Hopefully this weekend. 🤞♨️
