    My New Weber Toy!

Picked up this beauty new from a gentleman who got it as a gift for quite a discount. The guy new his Q too.

Bought the Slow 'N Sear with deluxe griddle. I also bought the DigiQ unit for the Weber, which should come soon and some gasket material. I want to set this up correctly right from the start. Thanks for all you folks who've posted information. I scoured the site for threads over the last few weeks and settled on this set up to start my Q journey. I've had a Weber Genesis for a while and used to use charcoal years ago, but did not really know anything until I started view this site and Meathead's book. I am a very good cook in the kitchen, but really wanted to get into doing BBQ right.

One question I have about the Easy Spin griddle, did you folks fix the lift up section permanently? It comes loose, but they state you can bend the hooks to fix it permanently.

Another question about using the DigiQ with the griddle where it is shown below. Will the griddle in this position, as a drip pan, affect the airflow from the Pit Viper Fan? I would be putting the fan connection in the upper right area around 1-2 o'clock, obviously below the griddle and grille.

Very nice! I have the easy spin. Got tired of the lift up section coming loose when adding wood and secured it. Now I'm thinking I should of just left it off when not needing the whole grate. Since its over the fire the majority of the time it is harder to keep clean. I'd try leaving it as is and just remove if not needed. I may undo what I've done.

Been my experience, as well...unhook/remove it fer LnS cooks, reattach fer direct high heat, especial Vortex yardbird....
                  YMMV

Congrats. Try it out before adding the gasket. If it doesn't leak, you won't need it, and the Pit Viper will control the temp anyway, so small leaks don't affect the temps. If you do use the gasket, make sure the attachment area is squeaky clean or the gasket will not stick.

The Pit Viper goes under the DnG. There is a space between the swings of the sweeps where you can drill the hole without interfering with the movement of the sweeps.

Thanks. I was planning on running the DigiQ and Smoke probe wires under the lid and thought the gasket would help reduce leakage.

I have my BBQ Guru fan adapter installed on the front of my Performer, so that the fan is up front and easier to get to. You need to put it in between the area covered by the ash sweeps. The two photos below give you somewhat of an idea of where I put the fan. When using the fan, I put the SNS in the rear of the kettle, the Drip 'N Griddle on the front, and the air pushes back under the DNG to feed the fire. So the SNS is dead center in the back.

I deal with the Easyspin grate with the open loops. Sometimes its a pain, but I like to remove it when I am using the SNS for smoking.

Thanks for the photos, they really help. Do you find it easier to tend the food with the SnS in the back?

ScottyC13 I only use the fan for long low-and-slow type cooks, and yes, while I used to keep the SNS in the front, having it in the back when using the fan means I don't have hot coals to reach across, and smoke in my face when rotating the meat when smoking. Plus all the wires and cables are up front. Granted, I have the PartyQ, and the controller hangs off the fan, but if I replace it with a Fireboard, I still think it will be good to have all the hookups up front for the fan.

ScottyC13 if you have not drilled a hole for the fan adapter yet, I advice you to look down in the kettle with the charcoal grate in place, and work the ash sweeps, and identify the 3 spots the guru fan adapter can mount. I chose the spot on the front side, versus the back, for convenience. It was easy too for me - I had ashes in the kettle, and the places where the sweeps didn't hit were evident.

                1) GREAT score. I use my Kettle way more often than I do my BGE. It gets all the grilling. I still use the BGE for the low and slow, but IMO you have the best pure grill available.

                2) I clamped my Easy-Spin. The falling-apart bit is a PITA. Generally, I rotate it between cooks so that different parts get heated during different cooks. Remember, though, that I mostly grill with it. If I did more low and slow I’d keep it over the S&S.

                3) I think the positioning of the drip pan is fine. Air finds its path.

                4) The killer application is to put the griddle on top of the spin grate and over the S&S. Then you have a griddle for smashburgers. You can get 4 burgers on the griddle. The fat from the burgers atomizes and gets turned to smoke by the charcoal, and you get the best of both worlds: griddled burgers with charcoal flavor!

So my DigiQ came today and I also got a silicone basting brush and food handling gloves, addition to the Weber, SnS and other stuff.

My wife said in her best Robert Downey Jr (Kirk Lazarus) voice, "Wow Hon, you’ve gone full Q. You never go full Q." LOL!
