Getting coals closer to grate....

I'm using the S&S to grill my flat iron steaks but hate using so much charcoal for such a short cook time.

Any ideas on how to use fewer coals and still get them close enough to the grate?

Pile on one side of the SnS?

A fire brick or two inside the SnS?

Use bricks to build a box and lay a grate over them. You could lay the bricks down to be shorter too.

I’ve gone two or so coals deep, but you get less heat than a deep stack of lit coals. The kettleman kettle has this problem also. Try it, but you may go back.

Or just get a shorter, wider chimney and sear over that. I usually do this when I don’t need a full grill running.

I use a charcoal chimney with Kingsford. Cheap and HOT.

The Weber baskets work well and they're cheap.

Here's how I do it on my Primo XL. I invert the expansion rack to go low instead of high.
