Old Weber Kettle with Wood Handles

i’ve had this 22” Weber Kettle for quite awhile.

I don’t remember where, but several years ago I found a guy who was selling really cool looking wood handles with the Weber name burned in, so I added some.

With a Slow and Sear, the griddle, and drilled holes for grill and meat probes, it’s a very functional old pit.

Although I’m always looking at all kinds of units 😀

Have my eye on the PK360 at present.

i used to own a really spectacular Pitts and Spitts 24 x 36 with an attached smoker box, but it was just too big for my use - used to cook for some parties but nowadays pretty much for myself and perhaps some neighbors.

    Happy cooking! 👍

The old Pitts and Spitts, which I bought in 1993, I sold for about what I paid for it.

The original owners sold the company and the new owners kept the name, but I’ve heard the pits aren’t as good.

When I got it all cleaned and polished up for sale, I almost didn’t want to sell it - but just too big for my use.

A fantastic unit for back then.

While not all the owners of the Brand treated it with the respect it deserved in the 90's and 2000's I would say we are producing the best units we ever have.

That's a nice looking kettle and I like the wood handles.

Nice Kettle jmwaldhelm . A kettle can't be beat for a universal cooker--IMO.

            Pretty clean 😀

Cleaned the Weber after putting the handles on and the Pitts & Spitts picture was when it was almost new.

That is a " customized" Weber. I know some around here call it mod, but that is a distinct difference. Sorta like chromed wheels. Really cool! 🕶

Craigslist has them by the score! A little cleaning and you're good.

No Craigslist in my neck of the woods, we have Kijiji up here in the sticks.
I've found a couple on there in the $50 range just have to take the time to scout them out. Then again may just go new so I know what I'm getting. Have to watch Home Depot flyer for sales.

It seems that "Do you pre-burn your wood?" is the Pit version of "Bless your heart."

Nothing beats a Weber Kettle, IMO. Even though I want several other cookers to go with my Webers.

I try never to say that nothing beats (insert name of favorite cooker) around my wife. That gives her the idea that I need to get rid of all the other ones!

jmwaldhelm glad to have you join us!

There is almost nothing you cannot do with your current setup, with quantity being about the only limit. And I’ve been able to cram a surprising amount of food onto my 22”kettle! I’ve got a 24x36 offset, but honestly, since I got my Weber Performer Deluxe (22") and the Slow N Sear, I've found myself using my offset less and less. I can fit 2 butts, 4 chickens or 5-6 racks of baby backs onto the kettle if I get creative, and get the same results that I got on the offset with about 1/4 (or less) of the charcoal and wood used. The last few times I fired up the offset were to smoke Thanksgiving turkeys, maybe once last summer for a bunch of spare ribs, and almost a year before that to smoke Boston butts for a party of 80. So, 3 times in maybe a year! The kettle is used weekly or more often.

Yep, that’s why I sold the Pitts & Spitts, way too big for my use - a guy bought it that cooks all the time for big groups, it was in just about perfect shape.

Not to say that I’m always looking at various units.

I keep reading about and liking the PK 360.

Hasty Bakes, the M-1, Backwoods Smokers, etc., but then I would be getting back into the larger units which I don’t need.

Fun to look at and read about though. 👍

jmwaldhelm yes it is always fun to "window shop" for your next grill or smoker! I've been window shopping the next smoker for several years now. In the meantime I just keep accessorizing the cookers I've got! The PK360 is really nice. With the kettle, you would double your grilling and/or smoking space.
