    MCS Strikes Again

I'm not sure I can afford the Pitmaster site. While I was at Home Depot picking up Weber Charcoal on sale (a post that I had read before the new year $8.88 or so) I happened to look up. There was a Performer Premium for $175. Next to it was the kettle alone for $150. I had never thought about a Weber charcoal grill. Why would I want one? I have a little two burner gas grill that does just fine and will be even better after I get my grill grates (another thing that I didn't realize I needed until I started visiting the site on a regular basis). I went grocery shopping and found a tri tip and a large prime ribeye in the sale bin. Both pieces of meat that are best smoked. So I got to thinking. My drum smoker takes the better part of a bag of charcoal to run for what should be a short run and I have a little pellet tube to smoke in the gas grill that puts a light smoke flavor on the meat. After looking through the site, I had seen that the Weber kettles are a viable smoking option. That got me thinking that it might be just what I need for these smaller pieces of meat. Also, I can buy one for $150 or for another 25 dollars get one with a table. So, just a mere 24 hours later, I now need one of these things. So I got it, brought it home (it was a demo so it was assembled), started my charcoal and dumped it in the little side bin they gave me and made a drip pan with foil with the side near the charcoal folded up to the grate (thanks to who ever showed the trick with the foil pan that I saw last week. I could not find it today) and cooked the meat. After all, I didn't have a SNS on my gas grill and I didn't want to wait the week for it to arrive. Tonight I cooked one of the best tri tips I had ever done and the judge said it was great and I can keep the grill. Now to order the Slow N' Sear. And I still want/need grill grates for the gasser. And maybe I should get a set for the new kettle as well? To think, two weeks ago, I had everything that I thought I would ever need to turn out great steaks and roasts.

Thanks all for showing me this great stuff to really create some amazing cooks.

1st - welcome to the Pit. 2nd - you've already got the SNS ordered right? RIGHT?

I sort of feel like a bully whenever I hear someone bought a kettle (both here and among people I encounter)....I immediately all but force them to order the darned thing.

Glad to hear of yer success on the tri tip.

I'd haveta guess yer judge is less than impartial, so since ya got thumbs up, I'd recommend doin a (brief) Happy Dance,(out of sight of th judge ), an start plannin up some great ribeye.

Funny how that works. Now that you have the kettle and an SnS on the way, I won't even mention the Drip N Griddle or the Easy Spin Grate - nope, not me.

I want a kettle. I found a cheapie on the side of the road, so for now I’m good. But I want a proper kettle that I can get fhe pizza oven thing for.

I would definitely get the SNS and probably the drip and griddle pan, along with grill grates for your gas unit, but probably would leave or at least wait to see if you want grill grates for the kettle. The syndrome just keeps going.

The SNS and Drip & Griddle are on the way. Grill grates will have to move to next pay period. Do I really need to pay my bills? Maybe the bank or the cable company will take Brisket instead?

If not a Tri Tip is always a good choice

You probably won't need grill grates for your kettle. The sear zone of the Slow-n-Sear gets nuclear hot.

I don't think I will get a PBC. I have a Hunsaker Vortex drum that I replaced my offset with. After my last cook though, I think I need to get the split grate so I can hang my chicken while I cook the other meats on the grate up high. I really burned up a chuck roast because it was too close to the fire making room for the chicken that I leave whole and stand up beer can style. There is also another thermometer in my future to measure grate temperature so it doesn't happen again

Yep, before I became a member of this site I thought I had everything I needed to cook. Was I ever wrong.

Webers are about all I cook on. I have 5 different 22s including a SSP, a 26, and a Ranch. Once you start playing with the 26 and the Ranch you can pretty much kiss your paychecks goodbye. My original 22 inch kettle is the one that gets the bulk of the use but I am always excited when I get opportunities to fire up the bigger grills. Still need to get a SNS XL for the 26 and a RKE for the Ranch if they ever sell them again.

Of course Weber Kettles aren't the only good cookers out there but for the price it is hard to be the quality and versatility.
