Modding my Weber charcoal grill... A couple of questions for those who have treaded this path before

Hi! I'm going to mod up my 22" grill with a Pit viper fan, a probe gasket (The WSM one) and I use a SnS and a DnG,

I got a 22" Performer Deluxe (The one with the gas starter), I haven't used the gas starter in more than 4 years, so I'm planning to take the whole system out, and use (enlarge) the starter hole for the fan.

Thing is, I have some doubts on how the airflow would behave. I would be putting the fan at 3 o' clock, and the SnS at 9' o clock. The DnG go at 3 o' clock on this setup.

My thoughts are that the fan will be blowing directly into the DnG, not the coals, or at least not directly.

Will this setup affect my temp control? Or does anyone have some suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

If you are using the dng all the air should come up through the SNS no matter where you put it. I put my fan port opposite the SNS so it’s not directly under it and getting piled with ash.

Apparenly some folks have modded the ignition system system to back it up and light the SNS. Might want to do that since a 1” hole saw can make a port anywhere you want it for the fan (keep it below the charcoal grate but above or out of the path of the ash sweepers ).

I think the hole for the fan should go just under the charcoal grate and located so that it does not interfere with the charcoal sweep blades. I use the gas lighter all the time. You can pile the number of pieces of charcoal you light for the SnS above the flame and they will light quickly. Or you can use either the large or small Weber chimney to light your starter coals. The small chimney works great for this. Then just dump them into the SnS and off you go.

That's what I'm doing. I use the chimneys (big if need high temp, small if smoking) which is why I don't use the gas starter, and I don't plan on use it

The chimney and the gas lighter were made for each other. Just sayin'...

I agree with Ron. I have the same setup and it works great.
