I loved it in the beginning. But I now have two recycle containers full of those green empty gas containers. Which they will not take to recycle.
Does the new one have a small refillable one? I mostly use retired KBB bags to start my chimney now.
The first Performer I had did not have the gas ignition. My current unit does. VERY, very convenient. I use it any time I'm cooking on the patio, even if I'm not using the Performer. I still use the ignition to light a chimney for the 26 or the PBC. Definitely worth it IMO.
Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
I use that igniter every single time. On the other hand, old newspapers are free.
For my $50, I'm glad I have it, I'm the type of person who wants all the bells and whistles. I would know I didn't have it every time I cooked. If you're not that guy, then skip it, because... old newspapers are free.
Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.
I use it to light the chimney. Very convenient. I’ve got both chimneys going at the moment. I couldn’t use the ignition because I have a chuck roast going with SnS in the Performer.
I’ve got the Performer Deluxe, and an adapter hose to let me use a standard 20 lb propane tank. I use the starter to light charcoal for not only the Performer but my other grills as well. The hose I am using is one I think Weber markets for one of their portable grills, but it screws right into the Performer Deluxe. It’s plenty long enough to leave hooked up and fit the cover over the grill as well.
its definitely worth the extra $50 for the convenience of gas ignition on the Deluxe.
I do the exact same thing with the 20lb bottle. You would regret not buying the deluxe the first time you had to light a chimney using some other method.
If you can get the Premium for $234 get it. The gas starter is not worth THAT much of a premium, if the Deluxe is still $399. I buy boxes of Duraflame fireststarters at Lowe’s and break off about 1/3 of one each time I need to start a chimney of charcoal.
When I bought the Premium, I thought the gas lighter was a gimmick, but it's great and I use it for every cook. Not having to deal with newspaper, (and their ashes), in the chimney is super.
