    Grilling for DOG

Do you grill for your dog? If so what do you grill? I was thinking I could smoke some bones.

Be careful when cooking bones for your dogs. They can easily become brittle and splinter while they’re chomping down on them.
You’d be better off giving them raw ones. It could get a little messy in the house but they won’t care.

I've been taught my whole life that chicken and pork bones are not good for dogs, due to the reasons mentioned, but beef bones are fine. Have never heard cooked bones are bad for them. Rather, it is best to cook them.

TheCountofQ a neighbor of mine from years ago only fed their dogs raw whole chicken wings. 2 in the morning and 2 at night. Some kind of wierd diet. They never had any problems.
Thinking if you cooked the beef bones low and slow they would be ok. But it also will depend on how big the dog is and how aggressive of a chewer they are.

I feed my dog the raw/ prey model diet. All raw meat and raw bone. Chicken, fish, pork, beef, you name it. It's safe. However once cooked or smoked, the bones are dangerous, whether the dog eats fast or slow. It isn't the cheapest or most convenient way but Raw is the best and healthiest way to feed your dog. This includes all you cat people too!

I used to grill burgers for my girl before she passed away from lymphoma. I gave her anything just to get her to eat. Click image for larger version

RIP pup. My girl is over 17 now. We're enjoying every moment with her. She still loves hiding bones in the backyard.

Our oldest saved my life. She's about 14 now, and she still gets steak every now and then.

I don't grill for him, but he gets all of the scraps. I save all of the bones, veggie scraps, and trimmings and include it with the pork shoulder or chicken that I cook for him in the IP. 240 minutes under pressure turns chicken and pork bones to mush and I blend it all up to feed him along with half of the dry food we used to feed him. The IP makes it easy.

When my grandparents were still around, they always supplied all the beef we needed. I had a chest freezer containing a variety of cuts go out several years ago. It was all at least partially thawed by the time I realized it, so I fired up the gas grill and just started cooking it all to chop up for dog food. My German Shepherd thought she had died and gone to Heaven!

Local butcher shops sell smoked femur bones for dogs and I be gotten them regularly for my dog and she loves them. I think you're correct smoked is not the same as cooked.

The lower heat probably keeps the bones from becoming brittle

I read somewhere that dogs fare best eating animals that are smaller than them. For example some dogs have a hard time digesting pork. So poultry it is, and my dogs get 2 Cornish game hens on their birthday. If I can find the source of that article I'll update it here.

I grill chicken all the time for my 2 dogs but as a rule we do not feed them bones, except for the very rare rib bone which is probably not good for them.

My little buddy, a black lab, came to us as a rescue. First time I grilled I wrapped a Liittle Smokey in a piece of foil and tossed it on while the grill came up to temp. Once cooled she got it in pieces. Now she associates that whenever the cover comes off the grill it's Little Smokey time. She's relentless until she gets hers. After that she could care less.

According to the AKC website certain meats are more likely to cause allergic reactions: pork, rabbit, and lamb. They suggest serving a small amount and seeing if there is a reaction. They give ham a thumbs down due to excess fat & sodium. Salmon good & sardines great because they have tiny bones that provide calcium. They say the biggest danger with any meat is the dog taking in spices & seasonings from rubs or marinades.

After reading this article I'll stick with raw bones from the butcher.

In addition to guidance to avoid brittle chicken and turkey bones, the FDA says "bone treats," which it distinguishes from uncooked butcher bones, can cause harm, sickness and sometimes death.
