To me personally, anything going through the lid is a pain when I need to remove the lid. It's a good recipe to fling the transmitter (happened) or pull the probes out from their nested spots (happened) because I wasn't used to it. Of course others may do this and be more careful than me and love it.

It works ok if you have a 22" kettle and a hinge for the lid. Otherwise, I would not attempt it.

I use a hook right above my WSM to hold the lid and I so far haven’t ripped out anything through the vent. But that doesn’t mean I won’t!

I've tried running my probe wires through the top vent and I didn't adapt very well. It was snag city. I never had temp issues with 1/4" to 3/8" holes in my kettles, so I recently drilled them to 1/2". Heck I can even pass the ThermoWorks needle probe through it. This is not for everyone but works fine for me. Top vents have be closed a bit more.

Alright so you went aggressive and did not experience much heat loss. I will probably do the same........I may even try to work on a "swivel patch" with a notch that I can close as needed. A bit ambitious though for my meager mechanical skills. Thanks for pic! That helps a lot!

I run 'em under the lid for now. Gonna install a grommet at some point.

I am a vent guy on my WSM. It is a pain in the butt for sure. I rigged a hook to hold my lid since I don’t have a hinge. I think I am converting to just running it under the lid.

Removing the analog thermometer is an interesting idea, though. You might as well use the space for something!
