Anyone add an extra handle to their Weber 26?

So I just got a new Weber 26, and it's big (shocker). I like the lid holder it has, but I can see me burning myself lifting/sliding the lid back. It seem like an extra handle on the front would help. Has anyone else done this?

    I mocked up an example:

Nice idea. The 26 lid is pretty heavy.

Yeah, if you get lazy you can burn the inside of your forearm on the lid. I have only done it once, because once is all it takes. I have since taken to standing to the side to slide the lid back into the cradle.

Yes, inside of the forearm. Part of the problem is probably my setup. I have a SS table on one side and a step down on the other. If I could step to the side it wouldn't be much of an issue. But I noticed that a handle in that location would make the 26 lid perform a lot like the lid of gas grill.

What Craigar said...I only did it once and I step slightly to the side when I slide it back. I'm going to have to replace the lid handle's nuts as they keep loosening up and I don't want the handle to come off and "release" the lid.

I have not seen one with the extra handle but I like the idea. I have also seen several with a hinge added. I can step around mine and usually do to lift the lid.

Before I used the 26 I was thinking I might want to install one of those hinges. But the system included operates pretty well and almost like a hinge. I'm guessing the hinges are far more expensive than a replacement handle.

Craigar fuzzydaddy jgreen Attjack When you are used to working in a kitchen that's an occupational hazard. Also we use tongs for everything. Lift the lid and grab the bottom with the tongs in the other hand. Tongs are like the duct tape of the kitchen. I see your point though.

That would work. So would gloves or even the top damper handle. Part of me is just geeking out on my new grill, and wanting to sup it up. We'll see if I really end up drilling into it.

I cook, approach, an' remove/install lid from a side angle, slide to th' side, rather than try to long arm it from th' front....
Zero inner forearm burns, so far, at least... Gloves are always involved, when tendin' cookers...
            Cheap, easy, semi-elegant, fully functional...
            My kinda solution...

Have not had a problem with mine and I am in pretty close quarters. Looks like a good idea though.

I really like the extra handle idea. If you find you don't use it too often, it hurts nothing. I am guessing you will find it to be very useful.

How about switchin' the positions of the table and the grill? That way you could reach the handle from the side.

No issues here, I just roll it against the wheel thingies on the lid holder

For what it's worth - I was in my local hardware store and looked at the 26. I played with the lid a lot with visions of the extra handle. I really like the idea.

So I went to buy a replacement handle to do this mod. The link took my to a page with the message "page not found". So I contacted customer service and their response was "We do not have any other handles for the 26" kettle other than the ones that came with the grill." Strange.

Since this thread got bumped here's an update. I have purchased the new handle, but haven't installed it yet. I also has a WSM grommet I'll install at the same time.

Attjack at one time I thought the extra handle was needed but after a couple years and tons of cooks on it I don’t think it’s necessary, at least for me. I’m 6’3” and I think being taller helps me keep my body away from the kettle when moving the lid.

My grill is also on the edge of the deck, and I like to open it that way. You're right that isn't necessary. But it would be an improvement, and I already bought the extra handle so at this point I am going for it.

I think it’s a great idea, and agree weber should include it. I usually move to the side so it’s easy to slide into the holder. I’m getting ready to put mine in a table this fall, so I won’t have the lid rack anymore, going to need to figure out how to hang it on something.
