    Cleaning Weber Kettle

Last evening as I was grilling some chicken breasts I was putting the lid back on my Weber. I accidentally dropped it on and "Peppered my chicken". Besides elbow grease is there a better way to clean off the build up on the inside of my dome.

    Thanks

I bought a $0.99 plastic putty knife and knocked/scraped out 80% of it in 3 mins, most of it flakes off in big chunks. The other 20% is harmless.

I agree with JPGators17, that's what I do to. Once that is done, I make one helluva fire to get rid of the rest.

Rember to remove the grate before doing the fire. I kind of warped mine leaving it on.

I use soap and water then a little 409 but mainly a little elbow grease with a plastic dough/bench scraper

I don't recall where I read it (it may well have been on Weber's site), but I recently read that a razor blade holder works wonders. The writer indicated that he goes through about 5 blades per cleaning. I've always tried to be careful of the finish and never would have tries this, but it works wonders, and did not damage the finish. For me it worked better I. The kettle than the lid. Still slowly working my way around the lid as I wait for my fires to start.

I take mine to the car wash whenever it looks bad. The self service car wash that has high velocity hoses. The soap and high pressure water cleans everything off. It takes 5 minutes maximum.👌

I came here to post the same thing. I don't own a pressure washer at the moment, so this costs me $2 and about 10 minutes, including drive time.

Breadhead, a plethora of mostly useful information. Thank you.

It's a perilous business, cleaning a grill. Last time I did it I discovered places where there was no grill left -- just carbon filling in where the metal used to be. That's how I knew for sure it was time for a new grill ...

It's great to have a credible rationale, though!

I use old credit/debit cards. They work perfectly. I also have used a ball of foil but i don't like it as well.

Jon Solberg, in another post recommended ammonia, putting a cup on the unlit grill and covering the grill with a plastic bag overnight. I used it and it worked.

grezs , and what did you do the next day, scrape the stuff off? Powerwash the entire kettle? Fire the kettle up?

I guess what I'm asking is what exactly did the ammonia do?

              Kathryn,

After an overnight, I just rinsed the inside of the kettle with a garden hose. What the ammonia did, was loosen all the scale from the inside of the kettle. How it did it is beyond me, but it worked. Some things I just take on faith in my fellow pit masters.

What's this "cleaning the dome" that you speak of? Unless there are some monster flecks that are in imminent danger of falling, then I don't bother. Dropping the lid was all the cleaning that's needed.

Danjohnston949 and Skinsfan1311 , my dome was getting ready to flake. VERY uncool to pepper today's cook with last month's residue. Only reason I do it, except to clean out the junction of the dome and base for a better seal.
