    Grilling lesson for wedding gift.

A coworker got married and their register was pretty picked over. I noticed someone had bought them a basic Weber Kettle. I asked how much she grilled. She said not much in the past because it's a pain to light the coals, her wife was concerned about the additives in charcoal and lighter fluid, and nothing ever came out right so they had given their old Weber away but wanted to try again. So for a wedding gift I got them a chimney, starter cubes, a bad of natural lump charcoal, charcoal rails, and a lesson.

Tonight we grilled strips, shrimp, salmon, and asparagus. Everything came out perfect. Thought it was cool gift if I don't mind saying so myself.

I don't know what you mean, I see it and got your question. Might have been a brief hiccup.

Huskee Yeah, right after I tagged you it seemed to pop into the feed stream. Then I couldn't figure out how to delete my comment tagging you. Sorry for the trouble. Carry on.

Seriously. The lesson alone was probably the best!

A great gift for sure. I've thought about doing the same for my son if he ever marries his GF.

How's that saying go again... give a man a steak, feed him for a day. Teach a man to grill his own steak over charcoal on a weber kettle.... well you know

      Hmmmmm....
Nerdier than having a programming history that includes BASIC, COBOL, Pascal, FORTRAN, DOS?
Or even(GASP) past history of makin' punch cards??
Nerds of a Feather, sez I!!!

Good on you for coming up with an original idea that won't be forgotten. I remember going to a house warming one time. The couple was newlyweds and had too much disposable income, in my opinion. Had a beautiful grill and no idea how to use it. They started a bunch of stuff on it and promptly forgot about it. Of course alarms are going off in my head, so I offered to man the grill. My offer was gratefully accepted and things turned out great. The moral of this is that although many of us take these skills for granted, there are some who are in the dark and greatly appreciate it when we share what we know. Which is why I love this site.

Well said. This site really changed the way I cook outdoors. Inside as well for that matter.

Very thoughtful gift. Well executed as well! I would imagine you'll get more opportunities to provide lessons.

A friend of my wife's asked if I would come over and teach her husband. I said not unless I have his express written permission. I'm not touching anyone's grill uninvited.

That is one heck of a clever gift idea.

Ten years from now, they won't remember who bought them that set of mixing bowls. But they will never forget you teaching them how to grill. Fantastic idea!
