should the webber kettle grill top sit flush without movement?
So I got my first kettle yesterday. The lid seems to wobble a bit and doesn't sit flush with the base. It's not horrible, but the two aren't a true fit.
Should I get another one? I bought it from Amazon, they're pretty good at taking something back that isn't 100 percent.

Your choice. I'd try giving the lid a "hug" to get it back into shape to it sits level. I'm assuming it's the lid that's the problem. Set it on a flat surface and push down on the handle, if it flexes and goes flat then your lid is a little out of round. This is a fairly common issue from what I've read in these forums. Mine lid was not sitting level initially so my initial dry runs showed I couldn't keep temps below 350 no matter how closed down my intake and exhaust were. I hugged the lid, set a 60lb sand bag on it for a few hours, and it then would sit flush with the flat concrete surface in my garage. After that I'm table to hold temps in the 225 range. Try searching the forums for other ideas as well. Many people will also use metal binder clips to help with the seal.
Scotch: Current favorite- The Arran (anything by them), Glenmorangie 12yr Lasanta, sherry cask finished. The Balvenie Double Wood, also like Oban 18yr, and The Glenlivet Nadurra (Oloroso sherry cask finished) among others. Neat please.

Mine move maybe 1/4", it's not a tight back & forth fit. I'd call Weber if it's something terrible, they'll likely send you a new one if they determine it needs replaced. Register your grill first on their site (save your box's serial number or take a picture of it). Then if it's obvious your lid doesn't' fit right call Weber, don't mess with returning to Amazon.
When I received my 26" both the lid and the bowl were out of round, it was quite disappointing. Weber sent me both....hesitantly, especially with the bowl, but she admitted there was something wrong since I know grills and I couldn't get them to fit right after trying everything. The new ones fit so nice!
Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.
I'd follow the advice above and contact Weber. They are pretty good at resolving issues. You should be able to smoke and grill equally well on your kettle.
FWIW I smoke on mine all the time, and my lids have play. A little play is not going to hurt things. Binder clips https://www.amazon.com/ACCO-Binder-C...mazingribs--20 will help if you notice lots of smoke coming under the lid. A little smoke is ok.
i just had a conversation with amazon, they're one daying a total replacement. i just wanted to make sure it was designed to be flush (which i thought it was)
My lid fits fine, but I'm still considering a high temp gasket. That makes a better seal regardless and would certainly help or solve a poor fit issue.
It is, of course, your call. But I find using binder clips a hassle. Remember, with some care, your kettle should last for many years. Do you want to put up with clips for years? First determine if the lid is the problem. Actually, I'd find a flat surface and check them both. Once you are sure of the problem, call Weber and see what they are willing to do. They have great customer service and I think they will make it right. If you can't come to terms, (and I'd be surprised), return it to Amazon.
I think wiggle side to side is OK as long as it is not enough to allow smoke to escape. What needs to happen is the top edge of the bowl needs to contact the top's horizontal part all the way around.
I do have a leak, but the CyberQ still allows me to control temps. Just out of curiosity, I'm going to lay the lid on a piece of paper on the floor and trace a circle around it. Then I'm going to rotate the lid ~ 180* and see if the circles match. That will answer the out of round question, and any gaps between the edge and floor will tell me how flat it is.

Recieved the replacement today. The top definitely fits better. There's side to side movement now but no rocking up and down. Hopefully it will bring me many years. The SnS comes tomorrow!
