    Weber 22" kettle rusty grate

It's been quite a few months since I've used my backup kettle. Now that camping season is right around the corner it's time to get back to business. I opened the lid and found some serious rust on the grate. I love that one because of the flip up sides. Anyone have a magic potion to deal with this or is it time for the grate to go the the big kettle in the sky? 1. Go to store. 2. Buy a new one for $20. 3. Pitch the old one.

cjv140, I think You Might Be Able to Scrape Your Grate Clean With a Dandelion Cannon (Digger)! Also if You Clean It Carefully After Steel Wool Will Work! I Prefer the Weed Digger, Either Or Will Work Better With Some Heat in the Kettle! 🐣🐣 Happy Easter to You and Yours! 🐣🐣

Thanks, Dan! I may not be a smart man, but know better than to go 'toe-to-toe' with any Eunices. I do not have a Death Wish

Skin it off, an' git to cookin'. Spritz it with a lil' bit of oil, if'n ya' must...
That grate has lotsa life left in it; ain't worn in two nowheres, jus' yet
Or jus' send it to me...
Git a new one that will do th same in a few months...

Toss it. Mine started rusting after 6mo. Got a stainless w/hinged grates on Amazon for about $42.00. Hoping it lasts a wee bit longer.

Forgive my thriftiness, and I appreciate the tips! I'm sure Mrs. cjv140 would agree with the $20 replacement. Happy Easter all!

Another option is to get a stainless replacement grate. It's twice the price, but should last a very long time:

Once they begin to rust steel grates are beyond redemption. The nickel coating has worn or burned off. It will continue to rust and should be scrapped. Stainless steel aftermarket grates seem the best way to go, long term.

I think the best option is buy one of each use the stock one for the inserts and the stainless one for more messy cooks. Once your wife taste how good the messy foods taste she will be begging you to buy a bigger fancy setup like a stick burner, then you still have the kettle to do great things on the inserts

The $42 SS grate will last years and years. The plated grate will need replacing every year or two. And you'll be eating rust.
