Convert a Weber Kettle to Gas?

    Hi all!

*** feel free to move this post if it is not in the right forum ***

I have a Weber Kettle, which I love using (some claim abusing). I used it for smoking (no, have not yet sources the S&S - it is on the list), baking, pizza, slow-roasting, searing...just about anything. I love it, and the people I treat with tastes loves it too.

The challenge I face is that the apartment building I live in got a fire audit, and the board had to follow the fire restrictions, which makes charcoal grilling forbidden. This leaves me with a couple of options:

    - stop BBQ/Smoking/grilling...as if that is evva gona happen!
    - replace the kettle with something else (gotta be small enough to fit, while offering the flexibilities and options I "need")
    - convert the kettle to burn gas (electricity is allowed too, but...nah)

    Hence, my main questions is:

Who can point me to some good resources, including products, to help me decide if conversion is the best way? Looking for experiences, burners, examples.

    My secondary question is:

If conversion is a not-so-good idea, what should I do instead? I have a small balcony only, which is multipurpose (eating, cooking, growing vegetables etc), so space is really critical. Same is multifunction - I like smoking, I like slow-cooking, and I love pizza too. Apple pie on the kettle is just amazing...getting my mind off the topic now...

    Any ideas? Suggestions? Examples?

    Thank you in advance!

    Kai

Google "marine grill". They are designed to sit off the edge of a boat. For you, they would free up space. The ones I have seen are small though, and I don't think they would be easy to smoke on.

This is exactly what I was looking for! Too bad they are no longer available

MOVE! While you wait for your lease to time out, use one of these: http://www.weber.com/grills/series/go-anywhere

I'd put the kettle in storage and buy a small gasser until you can move on to a more tolerant location. The WeberQ grills are pretty decent.

Sounds like you need a new pile of bricks! But I would look at one of those small weber propane rigs. They run on those little coleman green tanks.

Lots of small, inexpensive gassers available. Check our searchable equipment reviews for ideas.

Everyone is suggesting that you move, but you will probably have to move to a different town or governing body as the regs probably apply to all the apartments in that jurisdiction.

Sort of, I would have to move to a house instead of an apartment building. A house with a garden...There I could fit it all...if the garden was large enough

Weber Q, pretty small and compact, I think Weber is still making them. Look on Craig's list, you might be able to sell the kettle and Buy the Weber Q. We visited my wife's friend in NC who lives in a condo. I did steaks and seafood all 3 nights, she was amazed her little Q could do that. It was a cool little grill. Downside is it's not charcoal, but you need to adapt to the current situation...good or bad. Or maybe get a Weber jumbo joe, and take it down to the sidewalk, parking area or grass yard and fire it up. I did that when I lived in the barracks while in the Army.

I do use the kettle outside from time to time, which is nice and the community likes it too. I could do that while getting a smaller, gas-thingie for the balcony... thanks for the tip.
