I have had my Big Joe for not quite a year and love it. The one con is that it takes about an hour to get ready to cook on. During the week that is a lot of time to spend. For those of you with a Weber kettle with SnS how long does it take to get up to temp and ready to cook on average, for a steak or chicken pieces, etc.

If you buy a 1500W wagner heat gun ($45 amazon) you can get your 12 or so briquettes fired up in less than 5 minutes for the SNS. From there you can wait for the smoke to clean up a bit after adding chunks and the rest of the charcoal. i just let her ride. The heat gun is great for getting the rest of the coals fired up for the sear portion, too!

BloomHybrid, I have a Weber Performer Deluxe with a Propane Igniter and I use a Weber Compact Charcoal Chimney (30+- Briquets)! I use it to light the S 'n S in my other Weber! I have a Vortex in the Performer Deluxe that I do most of My Steaks and Chicken Pieces on (legs and thighs, can't afford wings)! I can have the Weber/Vortex Combo ready to cook in about 15-20 Mins!

I have a primo xl so it's probably similar in size. I too take about an hour to cook if i'm doing a long smoke - mostly bc it takes time to get the smoke to the good blue smoke. Temp wise, I could be ready in 30 mins for chicken and a little less for steaks if i'm reverse searing. Try playing with leaving the lid off for longer after lighting. It'll come up to temps quickly that way.

BloomHybrid I cook on a Big Green Egg and how long it takes to start it depends on thee things - what temperature are you aiming for, how are you starting the fire and how are you adjusting the dome and vents. Of course, there are other things like whether you cleaned out the old ash and did you stir it after your last cook. Tell me what you are trying to do and how you are doing it and I may be able to help you start the fire faster. I've been cooking on the Big Green Egg for seven years.

Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.
Kamado Joe Big Joe takes about an hour, Weber kettle with SnS takes about 30 mins, Rec Tec takes about 15-20 mins and the Lang stickburner takes about 1-1 1/2 hrs to heat up.

If you just want to grill some steaks or chicken parts you don't need to wait an hour for your Big Joe to heat up. Pay no attention to the dome thermo.
How are you lighting you charcoal?
If you want a big hot fire very quickly use a weed burner to light it up. You'll be ready to go in ten minutes!

EdF ... just think of your BBQ Dragon as a heat accelerator. I use mine in my charcoal starter, my SnS on my Weber and on my BGE. Allowing charcoal or lump coal to increase in cooking temperature without added oxygen takes way too long. The BBQ Dragon is a YUGE time saver. .

Ed... I don't use a charcoal starter for the BGE. I don't point the BBQ Dragon at the lower vent. I always point the BBQ Dragon directly at the smoldering lump that I want to get hotter. I just open the dome and point the BBQ Dragon directly at the lump coal.

EdF Haven't tried the new BBQ Dragon integrated chimney yet, but it sure seems to make sense. You don't have to use it to start every time, but if you want to get moving fast, like when switching temp gears from low to high when reverse searing, or when your wife asks when will dinner be ready and you haven't fired up the charcoal yet, BBQ Dragon is a mighty good tool to have!
