Thats great! Since you I believe you may be the first on the site to have the insert I have lots of fun questions. Question about the coals - looks like they were positioned in the middle for the bacon and sausage and nothing in the middle for the eggs. Did you go through a lot of coals with it or just reposition them? How long did it take to cook the whole meal? I think Max Good said he liked the stand alone unit but noted that there were some spots that were hotter than others. I figure that with the insert that phenomenon might be minimized. Did you find it to cook evenly?

tbob4 I dump a full chimney load of lit coals in the center to get it hot all around. You do have hotter spots than some spots but you can re-position the coals to get those spots hotter. The coals were burning down so I put what lit coals that I had left under one side for the eggs. Next time I will closed the bottom vent more since I had them open all the way. The whole cook took about 30-45 mins (didn't time it).

Thanks. Keep the photos coming of it because like I wrote, you are going to be the resident expert on this. I'm getting really hungry now.

I forgot to mention that I agree with your hash brown choice, shredded are always a great option!

I WILL have one of these when the weather warms up!

So the coals only in the center still heats up the outer edges just fine? I was thinking from afar that spreading a chimney full into a wider circle then setting the Arteflame on after might even things out and make it heat up quicker? I cant' wait to play.

No, it was hotter around the inside. You have plenty of room to dump the coals in the center and take something and spread them.

That's supposedly part of the design: multiple temps, hotter near the center, so you can cook different kinds of things at the same time?

I had no idea that this thing even existed until DWCowles created this thread (and the thread where he announced he got this). I put this on my birthday wish list (April). I'm going to make it very clear that this is something I want. That's one of the things that makes the Pit so great - we get to discover things, through the experiences of others, that we'd likely never be aware of.
