    Weber selling out?

Went to my local hardware where I buy most of my grilling stuff. They said they are no longer stocking Weber grills. Said they got bought out by another company who is shipping production to China. Said the new grill don't have the same porcelain finish and has a lighter grade metal. Has anyone else heard if this is true or not? Hope not.

Haven't heard anything and a quick Google search didn't turn anything up so hopefully it's not true. Man, that would be a sad day in the bbq world if it ever happened.

Paging Max Good , paging Max Good!!!! Your assistance is needed in the pit.

Honestly though if this were ever to be true then HELLO BROIL KING for a gas grill. Owned by Onward Manufacturing Co. out of Canada but they are North American Built. One factory in my home state of Indiana, one in Tennessee, and one in Canada.

Family owned Weber sold off a majority of the company to some banker types about 5 or 6 years ago but I haven't read an other news about that changing. Some of their stuff is made in China some of it isn't. Haven't read any recent news about them moving all production to China.

My kettle and WSM are over a decade old. I've heard that ones made in more recent years are a slightly thinner gauge steel but I don't know if that is true.

My WSM bought this spring has the same gauge steel, as far as I can tell, as the Weber kettle I bought in 1989.

I bought a 26 kettle this spring and the lid is heavy as heck. Quality seems tip-top. This is probably (hopefully) not true.

I think the lid is 13 pounds.

Weber-Stephen was family owned since it was founded in 1952 by George Stephen. At the end of 2010 the Stephen family sold a majority stake to Chicago investment group BDT Capital Partners. In 2012, Weber settled a class action suit out of court regarding their use of the phrase, "Made in USA". Weber previously qualified the "Made in USA" statement by specifying their products are assembled in the USA with some components that are sourced globally. Here is an excerpt from Weber's statement "Weber believes that because all Weber grills and the disputed accessories are designed and engineered in the USA, and all grills save for one line [Spirit] are manufactured and assembled in the USA using component parts primarily made in the USA, it did nothing wrong and therefore has valid defenses to plaintiff's claims. The court has not held a trial or ruled in favor of either party on any disputed issues. Weber and the plaintiff have agreed to settle the matter to avoid the costs of continued litigation." As a result of this suit, Weber can no longer claim to be made in America.

They will be rolling out a new line called Genesis II. I don't know much about them, but heard rumors that they will be made in China.
