I really want a probe port for the Weber Kamado. It has a smoke port, but every time I think of drilling into the new shiny surface I kinda feel a little sick (probably due to how much it cost). Why didn't Weber just also come with a probe port!

Jessterr I used to snake the probe wire through the top vent of my kettle too, but on the kettle and now on my ceramic SNS Kamado where I smoke most often, running under the edge of the lid is not a problem. That 1 inch wide felt gasket pretty much seals around 1, 2 or 3 probe wires without issue.

I've seen the extension wires, and thought of getting some back when I used to run the offset and kettle side by side for extra big smokes.

tstalafuse if you were to drill through the double walled body, I am afraid you would end up ruining the Weber kamado. I am not sure if there is actual insulation in there, or of it is more like a thermos with an air gap, but having the gap broken without a sleeve of some sort to maintain it will likely lead to liquid getting in there, and air leakage, and all sorts of issues that could affect the insulation factor of the kamodo.

jfmorris Thanks for the suggestion. It would likely work fine, but the WSC is so insanely efficient that on a 250F cook, the top air holes are only open by a tiny amount, like 1/8-1/4”. More than that and it will run higher, and that’s beginning with a very controlled small fire, just a few coals going, with the bottom vents just barely cracked as well. Trying to keep the best seal possible between the lid and bowl for optimal temperature control.

I drilled a "smoke" hole - probably 1 inch - many years ago now in my Performer, using a step drill bit, and installed a BBQ Guru fan adapter in it, which came with a silicone plug for when not in use. I've never thought to drill a probe hole, as it just doesn't bother me that much to drop the lid on the wires for my Thermoworks probes. I used to worry about it making the lid leak, or crushing the wires, but I have yet to lose a probe because I ran the wires under the edge of the kettle lid. And any slight leak from running the skinny probe wires under the edge of the kettle lid is not enough to affect maintaining grill temp when smoking.

I am glad to see you pimping out your existing grill smokenoob - really no reason to toss a working Weber kettle to the curb. The SNS kettles are nice, but after all, they made their business making accessories for Weber kettles....

I see now that they also sell their folding side shelf for use with other 22" kettles. Looks like 4 holes drilled to mount it.... if I did not have a Performer, with its massive cart/table, I would be installing one of those. Or possibly buying the brackets from "Unknown BBQ", and installing the kettle into a table/cart.

Hint: If you want to build your old kettle into a cart, these brackets are the way to do it:

These kettle brackets allow you to mount either the Weber Kettle 22.5 inch or 26.75 sized models into custom tables. Each bracket set comes with two brackets and the hardware required to attach them as needed.

Who knew that the Weber Kettle is the AR15 of the grilling world?

I love it - and jayjordan is spot on. The 22" kettle *is* like an AR-15 or a box of legos. You can do about anything with it.

The S.N.S. Webernoob was commissioned today! Folding side table, probe port and smoke port installed. Re-maiden voyage will be soon.

Have to give a shout out to Mjaik (SNS shipper), they had SNS accessory items on trucks within hours of ordering and free shipping!
