I want to be able to grill & sear fish worrying about it breaking up and falling through the grates. I’d also like to be able to sear some nice grill marks on steak and chicken. I’d also like it to be easy to clean, or to be dish washer safe.
I have a Weber 18” kettle. What grill grate set up do you recommend?
Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
I didn’t mean to ask about a specific brand or model. I was just describing what I am looking for.
Would you suggest that the product you mentioned is the best choice to meet my preferences? Or are there other similar or better options?
Thanks again,
JD

Thanks again Mosca,
I wonder why you no longer use your grill grates? I have flipable baskets for things like trout. I’m looking to put a hard sear on tuna steaks, chicken & beef.
Mostly because of the griddle. But even before that I’d disregarded them. The grill-up side is good for grill marks, but if you want that solid sear, you flip them over. But if you do that, then a solid piece of metal (steel or cast iron) is easier to use. The grill grates themselves are unwieldy, with the interlocking sections, and hard to clean compared to a solid plate. If I’m using the BGE for steaks, I use cast iron half moons. Or just do them closer to the coals.
I second Mosca. I was using mine flipped over probably 90% of the time. Then I bought a SnS plancha and haven’t used them since. And I don’t have to worry about sections separating like you do with the GrillGrates.
I have 18” Grill Grates fore my BGE and like Mosca rarely use. The primary reason is clean up and the secondary reason is that I find them unnecessary. Fish cooks quickly, so I usually cook my fish on a perforated grill pan. That way there is less worry about fish breaking up.
