    Weber and SnS go camping!

Some retired buddies and I went camping a few days ago. They asked me to cook, and I said sure, but I want to bring my grill. It was supposed to be for two nights, but the forecast of steady rain starting late the second night and continuing past check-out time the next day had us packing up early. We decided to leave after I cooked dinner on the grill, and before the rain came. First night was rotisserie chicken, (Simon & Garfunkel) with stir fried green beans and onions and everything turned out great. The second night was BBRs on the grill using the MMD and Sweet Baby Ray's. They cooked faster than I thought, so I could have pulled them off earlier. I was going to fix some side dishes, but everyone was happy with just ribs, and we did have to clean up and leave. And most importantly, they did all the cleanup.
So it wound up being an abbreviated fun time with only limited quantities of adult beverages being consumed.

I forgot to shoot the chix, but here are the ribs. Notice the legs and foot in the second shot? They were ready to eat. Click image for larger version

Beautiful ribs and I love the blue kettle. Sounds like you still had a great time. And who needs sides when you have ribs! S&G and MMD are my favorites. Sometimes instead of S&G I use Herbs de Provence.

The Weber Q, Smokey and Jumbo Joe, even the 14.5 WSM I can easily envision at a campsite. But a Performer? That is way cool.

Ron, I have a performer grill similar to yours, just acquired an SNS and proper temp monitor similar to yours in the picture. Question: are your probe wires going through where the lid meets the bowl or are you feeding them through the top vents. Thanks!

Where the lid meets the bowl for me. I take care to set the lid down gently.

SEDBZZ, Like JeffJ and with the Good advice of Huskee, I also run my Probe cables for the Maverick 733
and the DigiQ-2 Temp Control between the Bowl and the Top of the Weber Kettle!

I'm assuming that based on the pics, nobody starved, right? Thats some kind of nice campfire grub.

Nice camping cook RonB ... I'm sure you will become the Pit Master of all their camping trips from now on. When they invite on the next trip they will ask nicely if you could bring your kettle. My only recommendation is that you insist that they increase the quantity of adult beverages!😆

SEDBZZ - I bought a 3/4" brass close nipple, (that is the correct spelling), and two nuts to lock it in place. I then drilled a hole below the rim of the bowl, and used the nuts to lock it in place. Actually, I drilled the hole with a step bit and was able to get the hole to the proper size to thread the nipple into the hole. I chose that size so that I could fit all the probes into the same opening. I have a heat resistant silicone plug to put in the hole as needed.

CeramicChef - No one starved for sure. For breakfast, when we realized we would not be there for the second breakfast, I fixed homemade sausage, 18 eggs scrambled, and toast made from my homemade bread. There were no leftovers...

And thanx everyone who has commented.

Thanks to all for the advice, Ron thanks for the tip on the probe configuration. One last question, should I get a gasket to run around the lid? I did a dry run last night and kept the temp between a min of 221/max of 235 for six hours while watching the Blues get shutout by the Sharks. That was painful, the dry run was not painful. Thanks again!

If you can control the temp without a gasket, don't bother. If you do have trouble, then I'd suggest getting one. If you do get one, make sure the surface is squeaky clean before applying the self adhesive gasket.

I don't have a gasket on mine mainly because I like to crack the lid to help with two zone cooking during hot and fast cooks. Here's what I mean:

Yeah the SnS pretty much kills all direct heat from getting to the indirect side, so fire bricks really aren't needed. Give them a try though and see if you find a way to use them that you like. I'll add the technique to my website!
