Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.
I have had a 26" Weber kettle since January. I've had the clips on my to do list since I bought it but haven't bothered getting them yet. I've done many cooks of various meats and have had no problems controlling cooking temps at 225°/240°/275° or 325°. I do get some smoke leakage out of the seam of the top and bottom but not much. I haven't even bothered to drill the hole to mount my DigiQ Dx2 yet. Maybe I'll do that someday, not sure.
Maybe I got a really good, well fitting, kettle... I don't know much about kettles really. I'll probably keep doing what I've been doing until there is a problem.
I've had the same experience as fuzzydaddy. I've never had to clamp the 26". The lid on the 26" feels like it's twice as heavy as the 22". Probably got a unit that was manufactured more carefully than the 22".
