When you meet someone who is so totally into smoking food who has no cooker and turned out absolutely wonderful ribs on a pellet grill, it makes me go to Less Cooker Syndrome mode!
I'm thinking about passing on my 22" Weber Smokey Mountain and a 22" (Uline) kettle with Santa Maria attachment. He told me he'd really like to cook with just wood. Is it overkill to give him both at once?
If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
I've given away several cookers too, and nothing beats helping out someone, and know that my excess cooker inventory went to a good home. I rehomed a kettle a couple of years back, and was glad to have it with someone who would use it more than I would with my collection of cookers.
I would just ask if he is in fact interested in both cookers, and let the choice be his, if you are interested in giving them away...
For all that I've taken some jabs for the size of my cooker fleet, about a dozen units have gone down the road in the past 7 or so years. One went to a neighbors son who's starting in adult life. Another was given to a high school bbq team (it's Texas, of course that's a thing). The others were sold to aspiring bbq "champions" to be, including one to a family member of the business that built the since discontinued cooker. He was the only brother who hadn't gotten one during the time they were built, so now the world is right.
Passing on these things can sometimes lead to new adventures and discoveries, so of course it's a good thing.
I have given away 3, and sold 2 at very reasonable prices.
I think this is entirely rational. My real worry is these women who keep buying shoes, wife included. Retired, nowhere to wear them, duh!
Well, I do still have the boots which summited Rainier, Adams, hauled bodies out on Mountain Rescue, etc.
Totally off topic but not deserving of a separate thread. Got my various MSU cheeses in today and we have been sampling all afternoon. Thanks CandySueQ for turning us on to this.
Now back to our original programming.🙂
Watch prices have gone insane the past year or two!
I have an everyday automatic - Seiko 5 with the crown at 4 o'clock. I think I paid $80 for it on Amazon in 2019 or so, and thought THAT was high. Today that same watch in the same color (black dial) is selling for $200ish on Amazon.
As above, I've found, bought or was given grills / smokers. Cleaned them up and passed some on. Usually to a younger who was just getting into our world.
Same idea here - I love to try different things. Got a free Big Poppa, cleaned up and found it was not my style. $40 for a Weber spirit grill, same story. Gifted both to family.
LSG Adjustable Grill/Smoker, MAK Pellet Grill, Large BGE with Several Attachments from the Ceramic Grill Store, Weber Genesis E335 Gasser, Cast Iron Pans & Griddle, Grill Grates, Mostly Thermoworks Thermometers, Anova SV Stick, BBQ Guru Controller and Fan
I've both sold and given away cookers to make room or upgrade my cooker fleet. When I've given a couple away that were pretty nice yet and actually worth some money I told the person receiving to make a donation to a Charity of their choice. I didn't want to know how much or who to, just make a donation.

I cleaned up my Kettle and installed new parts to give to one of my son's as a housewarming gift. He decided to flip the house instead of moving in and stayed in his apartment, which doesn't allow open flame cookers. I was relieved, to my surprise. That kettle has more sentimental value than I realized.
I’ve only given away one so far. I had a big offset smoker that the welders at our local BP office had built. Their safety people got nervous about an open fire so they gave it to me. It was huge and heavy. It would easily hold 10 briskets. It ended up being way more cooker than I needed. I had a guy with a small crane come set it on a trailer for me and gave it to my BIL. He does some big cooks for groups.
I hold on to my grills/smokers (13 last count). The reason is that I loan them out to people to try smoking food before they go out and purchase the items. I have a friend who's wife bought him a 22" WSM a couple of years ago. He smoked one turkey in it and has not used it since.
A year ago I lent my 22" WSM with a rib hanger attachment to a friend to so he could try his hand at smoking ribs. He played around with it for 6 months.
This Thanksgiving I have a friend that wants to try and smoke a 12-14 pound turkey. So I'm going to set him up with one of my WSM's, probes, wood and charcoal.
