I went out to fire up the Performer Deluxe an hour ago, and the propane assist won’t ignite. The button seems normal in that it makes a loud click, but nothing happens at the business end. I’ve heard that igniters go out, but what other things can go wrong, and how do I trouble shoot it?

It could be clogged with ash. That happened to mine. I used my air compressor to blow it out. Worked fine after that.

Did you try using a match or lighter? If that doesn't work, ya could be out of propane or it could be the igniter.
Either ash or insects can clog the tube that goes into the kettle. If you don't have a compressor, you can run something thin into that tube to try to clear it. If you do that and it does light, but the flame is not steady, and accompanied by a "whump whump" sound, you didn't fully clear the tube.
